OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of the six part series, the learner should be able to:

  • Describe the history and rationale of Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) advertising and assess the potential impact on the patient and physician.
  • Provide a strategy for managing patients with questions or requests based on DTC advertising.
  • Define off-label prescribing and identify conditions when a drug would be considered off-label
  • Describe the advantages, problems and practices associated with off-label prescribing
  • Describe the overall drug development process
  • Identify efficacy and safety information obtained from the drug development process and where   information is found in the product label
  • Describe new label changes implemented by the FDA and how new information is incorporated into the drug label
  • Describe the importance of post-marketing surveillance in monitoring drug safety
  • Identify how clinicians can report issues and the uses of the MedWatch program in improving drug safety

ACCREDITATION

The Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
