Critical Care Medicine Symposium

Kiawah Island

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES

This symposium should prepare participants to:

  • Manage the bariatric patient in the ICU
  • Outline steps to diagnose and treat renal patients presenting in the ICU
  • Describe strategies to address gastrointestinal bleeding in the critically ill
  • Care for the ICU post-op patient who presents with an open abdomen
  • Differentially diagnose unexplained hypoxia in ICU patients
  • Describe symptoms and treatment strategies for severe reactions to commonly prescribed medications
  • Treat anemia in the critically ill patient
  • Manage ICU patients presenting with acute stroke
  • Diagnose and treat mesenteric ischemia
  • Interpret ECGs of ICU patients
  • Describe causes of respiratory failure in ICU patients
  • Manage arrhythmia in the ICU
  • Discuss the standard of care for management of glycemic control in critically ill patients
  • Diagnose and manage acute stroke using telestroke remote network
  • Compare and contrast rescue modes of mechanical ventilation in the patient with a difficult airway
  • Relate lessons learned from combat physicians as they treat patients at the front lines
  • List treatment strategies for management of immunological crises with plasmapherisis and immonoglobulins
  • Evaluate treatment options for patients presenting with septic shock
  • Analyze the explanations for increased cases of c. difficile in intensive care
  • Diagnose and manage endocrine emergencies in critically ill patients

TARGETED AUDIENCE
This course is designed for pulmonary and critical care physicians, anesthesiologists, emergency medicine physicians and other physicians who treat critically ill patients.

ACCREDITATION

The Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing
medical education for physicians.

DESIGNATION

The Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 20 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians
should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.


Application for CME credit has been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians. Determination of credit is pending.

LOCATION

The course is held at Kiawah Island, a relaxing, family-friendly coastal resort near the historic city of Charleston, South Carolina. Kiawah is world-famous for its golf courses and its family friendly atmosphere. It was the course used in filming the movie Bagger Vance. Kiawah’s ten mile – long uninterrupted private beach is one of the nation’s top ten beaches according to the Travel Channel. There are about 10 miles of bike trails, and family activities are scheduled almost every night. These include rock climbing, carnivals in Night Heron Park, and other activities that appeal to all ages. Kiawah is also a nature preserve with hundreds of species of plants, birds and alligators. Kiawah’s naturalists are available for kayaking, birding expeditions, fishing trips and other outdoor activities. Kiawah’s full service hotel, The Sanctuary, won the coveted Mobil Five Star Award!


Kiawah is also ranked number two in Tennis Magazine’s greatest tennis resorts. Kiawah has nine restaurants that offer a variety of memorable dining experiences. If the type of accommodation you request is sold out, the most appropriate lodging available will be reserved for you. No charge applies to children under 18 years when sharing a room with parents.


A service charge of 8% per villa, per day is applied to the rate for unlimited local
and toll-free phone access, access to the villa fitness room and island-wide shuttle service. City and state accommodation taxes are 11.5 percent.
