Helpful Hints for
Dial-Up Connections

Computers

What is a dial-up connection?
Dial-up access is really just like a phone connection, except that the parties at the two ends are computer devices rather than people. Because dial-up access uses normal telephone lines, the quality of the connection is not always good and data rates are limited.

If a web page has a number of graphics, use of a dial-up connection may take a longer time for the web page to download.

What is a leased line?
A leased line is a permanent telephone connection between two points set up by a telecommunications common carrier. Unlike typical dial-up connections, a leased line is always active. The fee for the connection is a fixed monthly rate. Because the connection doesn't carry anybody else's communications, the carrier can assure a given level of quality.

Text Only Pages
If your computer uses a dial-up connection and pages on the MCG web site are loading slowly, use the text only version and you can see the basic contents. If you want to see the graphics associated with the page and are willing to wait for the page to load, then use the regular web page.

To access the MCG text only page, choose this option.

Using the Text Only Version
When you select a page in the text-only version, the page you selected appears below the text you were viewing, so you must scroll down the page. You will also find some "text only options" that may enhance your use of this version.
