The Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry and the Division of Continuing Education welcome you to 2008 Last Chance CE. This course is the final chance to receive CE credit from MCG this calendar year. We have a great program scheduled incorporating a wide array of dental topics. These presentations will provide clinically relevant, evidence-based information that you may bring to your practice and implement immediately.

We are especially delighted to welcome two guest speakers to our program this year, Dr. Michael Goldfogel from Colorado, and Mr. Steve Cartin, currently of Aiken, SC. Dr. Goldfogel is a restorative dentist with 30 years of clinical practice and research, while Mr. Cartin is a practice management consultant with national and international clients.

Our program is two full days, starting at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday morning and will include a box lunch both days in order to maximize your continuing education experience with us. Finally, the 16 CE credit hours that you receive will meet most local states' annual requirements for licensure renewal.

For first time participants, we look forward to having you and trust that you will enjoy your experience with us. For our returning participants, welcome back and thank you for your continued support of our programs. We are very excited about this year and look forward to a great course!

PURPOSE
Much of the focus on dentistry today is centered on aesthetics and implant dentistry. This year's Last Chance CE program will feature presentations covering these and other clinically relevant topics.

Many of the MCG School of Dentistry faculty are involved with exciting changes in dentistry. They are eager and willing to share their knowledge and expertise in their respective fields of interest. Our participants will gain enhanced clinical knowledge and an ability to manage the practice more effectively.

OBJECTIVES
Following completing of this course, participants should have a better understanding of:

  • Digital photography implementation into the practice.
  • Proper selection of all-ceramic materials and indications for luting vs. adhesive cementation.
  • Treatment planning for optimal esthetics with anterior implants.
  • Key elements necessary for success with implant supported prostheses.
  • Factors that determine longevity of esthetic restorations.
  • Select and utilize esthetic materials to maximize their benefits and longevity.
  • Oral diseases and restorative consequences for elderly patients.
  • Obstructive sleep apnea, its effects on patient health and options for dental intervention.
  • Practice management skills necessary to motivate the dental team and create happy and referring patients.

COURSE DIRECTORS
Dr. Van HaywoodVan Haywood, D.M.D., professor in the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry Department of Oral Rehabilitation, is a 1974 alumnus of MCG. He practiced in Augusta, Georgia and taught at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry before joining the MCG faculty in 1993.

 

Dr. Barry HammondBarry Hammond, D.M.D., a 1986 graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina College of Dental Medicine, completed a general practice residency in Chapel Hill, N.C. Dr. Hammond maintained a private practice for 15 years, emphasizing restorative and esthetic dentistry. He is an L.D. Pankey Institute alumnus and taught for several years with the Ross Nash Institute for Dental Learning in Charlotte, N.C. Dr. Hammond joined the MCG faculty in 2006. He lectures on esthetic techniques and occlusion. Dr. Hammond is MCG's University Advisory Council member for the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

GUEST LECTURERS

Steve CartinSteve Cartin served as General Manager and Chairman of the Board of Dental Systems, Inc., a company that provides monthly business-system support for 1,500 Texas and Oklahoma dentists. Before beginning Cartin Coaching & Management, he oversaw practice management consulting and business activities for Jameson Management in the UK and Ireland. He lives in Aiken County, S.C. and continues to work on both sides of the Atlantic.

Dr. GoldfogelMike Goldfogel, D.M.D., a graduate of Northwestern University School of Dentistry, has maintained a private practice in Englewood, C.O. for 30 years. He taught at the University of Colorado Dental School for 25 years, where he received two faculty awards. His publications include articles, a text on esthetics and video tapes. he has developed two sets of resin placement instruments and several other dental products. Dr. Goldfogel worked expensively in cosmetic and restorative resin systems. His experience in clinical application, research and consulting to several major dental manufacturers. He lectures extensively to university and professional audiences throughout North America.

CREDIT

The Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry is a recognized ADA CERP Provider, member of ACDE, ADA/CERP Approved, AGD Approved National Sponsor, FAGD/MAGD Credit. 01/01/06 – 12/31/09. This course includes 16 hours of instruction.

MEDICAL COLLEGE OF GEORGIA  FACULTY

  • Katharine Ciarrocca, D.M.D., M.S.Ed., a clinical instructor in the
    Department of Oral Rehabilitation, received her D.M.D. degree from
    the University of Pennsylvania, where she also completed postdoctoral
    training in oral medicine and a Master’s degree in education. She is a
    Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Medicine. Prior to joining
    the faculty, Dr. Ciarrocca served as an Adjunct/Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Oral Medicine at Penn.
  • Kevin B. Frazier, D.M.D, Ed.S., Associate Professor of oral
    rehabilitation, teaches esthetic and restorative dentistry and
    maintains an intramural general dental practice. He completed his
    dental education and a general practice residency at the University of
    Florida. He is a reviewer for the Operative Dentistry Journal and the
    Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry. Dr. Frazier is the councilor of the American Dental Education Association's Operative Dentistry Section.
  • Andrew Kious, D.D.S., received his degree from the University of Iowa and completed a general practice residency and a 2-year advanced
    education in general dentistry program. Dr. Kious is a diplomate of the
    American Board of General Dentistry and a member of the American
    Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine.
  • Jimmy Londono, D.D.S., received his degree from the Universidad
    Autonoma de Manizales in Colombia. He completed an implant
    internship at the Atlanta Center for Restorative Dentistry and a
    Prosthodontic Residency at MCG. He joined the Oral Rehabilitation
    faculty in 2007. He is an Associate Fellow of the American Academy
    of Implant Dentistry.
  • Steve Nelson, D.M.D., received his D.M.D. degree from Oregon
    Health Sciences University and an MCG certificate in Prosthodontics.
    He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Oral Rehabilitation
    and Director of the Postgraduate Prosthodontic Program. He is a
    fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists and a member
    of the American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics and the American Dental Association. Dr. Nelson is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics.
  • Kevin D. Plummer, D.D.S., Associate Professor of Oral Rehabilitation at MCG. He received his DDS from Emory University, post-graduate training in Prosthodontics from the U.S. Army and is certified by the American Board of Prosthodontics. He served 21 years in the U.S. Army Dental Corps where he was Consultant to the U.S. Army Surgeon General in Infection Control and OSHA Compliance and Dental Laboratory Operations. He is chair of the MCG School of Dentistry Infection Control and Hazards Committee and member of the MCG Institutional Chemical Safety Committee.
  • Aysegul Siranli, D.M.D., Ph.D., D.D.S., an Assistant Professor of Oral Rehabilitation, earned D.D.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Hacettepe
    University and a D.M.D. degree from the University of Pittsburgh. She
    completed an implantology fellowship and trained in surgical Placement of dental implants and prosthetic rehabilitation at the University of Pittsburgh. She served on the University of Pittsburgh faculty from 2005-08. In 2008, she joined MCG, where she treats patients and teaches prosthodontics and implant dentistry.
  • Viet Tran, M.D.C., began his dental laboratory training at Pasadena
    City College in 2004. He was subsequently accepted to the UCLA
    Center for Esthetic Dentistry Master Dental Ceramist Program under
    Dr. Edward McLaren, where he received his Master Dental Ceramist
    Certificate in 2008. In August 2008, Mr. Tran was recruited to the
    Medical College of Georgia.
