Clinical Anatomy of the Head and Neck

June 27-30, 2008

Overview
“Clinical Anatomy of the Head and Neck,” received with great enthusiasm by general practitioners and specialists, is being presented for the 32nd consecutive year. This course provides the foundation for improving dentists’ day-to-day practice. A significant part of the course is devoted to dissecting
pertinent regions of the head and neck.

Objectives
This course should teach participants to discuss/describe:

  • Radiological anatomy of the skull, emphasizing maxilla and mandible as organs
  • Clinical anatomy and pathophysiology of TMJ (expanded to include arthrography, CT, MRI and microscopic study of joint components by participants)
  • Anatomy, histology of maxillary sinus and surgical access for sinus augmentation
  • Bone grafts and their clinical applications to implants
  • Clinical anatomy of local anesthesia (to include Gow Gates Technique and V2 block anesthesia)
  • Neurological examination of the head (available also as podcast)
  • Nerve response to injury and post-traumatic neuralgia
  • Anatomical basis of emergency treatment
  • Surgical spaces of the head and neck and spread of dental infection
  • Surgical anatomy of the floor of the mouth with emphasis on nerves and arteries that need protection during implant insertion


The laboratory component of this course includes dissecting muscles of facial expression, facial nerve, infratemporal fossa and floor of the mouth. Vital  structures exposed by mucoperiosteal flaps at various sites of the oral cavity will be emphasized. Case reports will be presented and discussed on the last day of the course. The course will include a laboratory exercise where interested participants will insert implants in cadaver jaws and access intraoral bones and maxillary sinuses.

Course Faculty
Dr. Mohamed Sharawy
Dr. Mohamed H. Sharawy, Course Director, received his bachelor of Dental Surgery with Honor (B.D.S.) in 1962 and oral surgery training in 1965 from Cairo University, School of Dentistry, Cairo, Egypt. He received his Ph.D. degree in Anatomical Sciences from the School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Rochester, Rochester, N.Y. in 1970. He is currently Professor and Director of Anatomy in the Department of Oral Biology and Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, Georgia. Dr. Sharawy is Program Director at the MCG Dental Research Center and a Professor of Anatomy at the MCG School of Medicine and School of Graduate Studies.

Dr. Sharawy is co-editor and contributor to Orban's Oral Histology and Embryology, as well as a contributor to Implant Prosthodontics : Surgical and Prosthetic Techniques for Dental Implants. He has published over one hundred and eighty research papers and abstracts and made numerous presentations at national and international meetings. He is President of the Anatomical Board, State of Georgia and was recently elected to the Board of Governors, American Academy of Implant Dentistry Research Foundation. He is a member of many professional societies:International Association of Dental Research, American Association of Anatomists, American Association of Implant Prosthodontics and American Dental Association.

Dr. Ayman Ali, currently serves as a consultant for the Department of Anatomy, School of Dentistry at the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Ali is a member of numerous dental and medical societies and has published extensively in the area of TMD.

The registration fee for the course is $1,875. The registration fee, less a $150 administrative charge, is refundable if notification of cancellation is received prior to June 13, 2008.
