Craniofacial Growth and Development

PURPOSE
This course features timely and relevant information for any practice that treats children. Practical information, supported by sound science will help you provide the best care for your patients.

OBJECTIVES
This course will enable participants to:

  • Use new composite resins and understand how they work
  • Understand microabrasion and how to apply it during case selection and treatment
  • Describe indications and techniques for bleaching children's teeth
  • Understand traditional photopolymerized glass ionomer cements and compomers, including indications and contraindications
  • Assess fluoride-releasing restorative materials and their ability to inhibit caries and remineralize incipient carious lesions
  • Grasp recent scientific literature on pediatric dentistry
  • Review the tenets of evidence-based dentistry
  • Understand craniofacial growth and development from conception through adolescence
  • Describe the clinical implications of normal and abnormal development, emphasizing the cleft lip and palate

Dental practice is becoming more evidence-based as clinical trials and other quality studies are publicized. This presentation will review the best clinical evidence published in 2006–07 that could impact pediatric care. The quality of each study will be reviewed and the applicability to our patient population will be discussed.

Dr. Steven M. Adair
What goes wrong when a facial cleft develops? Why does a cleft palate occur in the midline, but a cleft lip does not? Do third molars contribute to the relapse of lower incisor crowding? These questions and others will be explored in this review of craniofacial growth and development from conception through adolescence. The mechanisms and processes governing development of head and neck structures will be reviewed, and their clinical significance will be emphasized.

FACULTY
Dr. AdairSteven M. Adair, D.D.S., M.S., Course Director, received his dental degree from the University of North Carolina, and his master’s degree and certificate in pediatric dentistry from the University of Iowa. He is professor and chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Adair is editor-in-chief of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Journal and a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. He serves on the Commission for Dental Accreditation, and is a consultant to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Air Force.

Dr. DonlyKevin Donly, D.D.S., is a professor and chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He received his D.D.S. in 1984, certificate in pediatric dentistry in 1986 and M.S. in 1986 from the University of Iowa.

Dr. Donly is a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, a board member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Foundation, chair of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Council on Postdoctoral Education, past-president of the American Society of Dentistry for Children and past chair of the Public Information Committee for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. He has published over 250 chapters, manuscripts and abstracts associated with pediatric dentistry and dental restorative materials research and clinical utilization.

Reservations will be held until 4 p.m. on the day of arrival unless guaranteed by a check for one night’s lodging or by major credit card.
