General Dentistry Problem Solving

PURPOSE
Every general dentistry practice has those few patients who present with an unusual condition or challenging problem from all other patients. The purpose of this course is to review some of those areas to better equip the dental team to care for these patients. The topics include soft tissue lesions, radiographic lesions, acid reflux effects, cancer patients, sensitivity treatment and caries control issues, as well as an update on infection control, OSHA and some simple full denture tips and bleaching tray fabrication options for different patient needs.

OBJECTIVES
 This course will enable participants to:

  • Discuss common benign and malignant oral soft-tissue lesions
  • Review common benign and malignant jaw radiographic lesion, diagnosis and treatment
  • Discuss the etiology of dental erosion and treatment options
  • Review chemo and radiation therapy effects on the mouth
  • Discuss updates on infection control and OSHA recommendations
  • Describe the simple techniques for consistent results with immediate dentures
  • Discuss treatment methods for sensitivity and the use of carbamide peroxide for caries control in elderly, orthodontic and radiation patients
  • Demonstrate the custom, thermoplastic and disposable options that exist for bleaching trays

A discussion of etiology of dental erosion; acid reflux disease; the role of acid reflux in dental erosion; and examine diagnosis and prevention of reflux-induced erosion

Simple techniques for consistent results with immediate dentures,. effective impressions and jaw relation records at the same appointment; trimming the final cast to insure proper fit after the surgery.

COURSE DIRECTOR
Dr. HaywoodVan B. Haywood, D.M.D., Professor of Oral Rehabilitation in the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry, is a 1974 MCG alumnus of MCG. He was in private practice and taught at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry in Operative Dentistry and Prosthodontics before joining MCG in 1993. For the last two years, he has been Director of Continuing Education for the School of Dentistry. In 1989, he co-authored the first publication in the world on Night Guard Vital Bleaching (at-home bleaching) with Dr. Harald Heymann, and in 1997 coauthored the first article on extended (six month) treatment of tetracycline stained teeth using this technique. He has completed further research and over 90 publications on the NGVB technique and the topic of bleaching and esthetics, including first papers on treating bleaching sensitivity with potassium nitrate, direct thermoplastic tray fabrication and bleaching primary teeth.

COURSE FACULTY
Dr. AbdelsayedRafik A. Abdelsayed, D.D.S., M.S., is Associate Professor of Oral Biology and Maxillofacial Pathology in the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry, Associate Professor of Pathology in the School of Medicine and Director of the Diagnostic Laboratory and Biopsy Services. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology and Endodontics. His interests include head and neck and oropharyngeal cancer, salivary gland tumors and bone pathology.

Dr. LazarchikDavid A. Lazarchik, D.M.D., Associate Professor of General Dentistry in the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry, received his dental degree from the University of Florida and GPR/Hospital Dentistry certificate from University of Alabama at Birmingham. From 1985-90 he was in private general practice in Jacksonville, FL and was a consultant to nursing homes, public health and to Prudential Insurance. In 1990, he joined the University of Alabama at Birmingham and became Director of the General Practice Residency Program. From 2001–05, he was in private practice and served as a hospital staff dentist at Carilion Dental Care in Roanoke, Va., which provides dental care for medically compromised, long-term care and institutionalized patients. He joined the MCG faculty in 2006 in the Comprehensive Care Program.

Dr. PlummerKevin D. Plummer, D.D.S., Associate Professor of Oral Rehabilitation in the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry, received his D.D.S. from Emory University and is certified by the American Board of Prosthodontics. He chairs the School of Dentistry Infection Control and Hazards Committee and is a member of the MCG Institutional Chemical Safety Committee. He served 21 years in the U.S. Army Dental Corps where he was Consultant to the US Army Surgeon General in Infection Control and OSHA Compliance and Dental Laboratory Operations. He is Clinical Supervisor in Prosthodontics at pre-and postgraduate levels and serves as Assistant Director of the Graduate Prosthodontics Program. Dr. Plummer's clinical interests include complete and partial dentures and implant-supported prostheses.
