Dental Update
for the General Practitioner
Brasstown Valley Resort
October 17-19, 2008
Brasstown Valley Resort

A Note From The Course Director

This year, MCG is proud to present Drs. Larry Holt and Scott DeRossi. Our featured speaker, Dr. Holt, has lectured across the United States and internationally on esthetic restorative techniques and materials. He will present his material beginning with the diagnosis phase of treatment, including photography and diagnostic wax ups to gingival morphology and its effect on treatment and the dynamics of a stable occlusion for long term success.

In addition to the restorative program, Dr. DeRossi will speak on the relationship of systemic health to oral health. He will present new  diagnostic tools for oral cancer detection, including a hands-on session Saturday afternoon.

Please join us in the beautiful North Georgia mountains for this terrific program.
— Dr. R. Gary Holmes

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES

This course aims to increase the general practitioner’s knowledge of diagnosing,
treatment planning, and implementing esthetic reconstruction by showing the
relationship between function and esthetics. Practitioners will also gain insight into the relationship between systemic health and oral health and early diagnosis of oral cancers.

GUEST FACULTY

Larry R. Holt, D.D.S., graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry in 1978, where he now serves as an adjunct professor, teaching in the graduate operative clinics and the undergraduate comprehensive care clinics. He is a former clinical associate professor at the Medical College of Georgia, where he taught post-graduate courses. In his 30 years of private practice in North Carolina, Dr. Holt developed and refined his esthetic skills and techniques, to which he now limits his practice. He lectures extensively in the southeast.

A featured clinician on several occasions for Nobel Biocare, Dr. Holt was one of five U.S. dentists to perform live treatment at Nobel Biocare World Conference 2007. He has presented at the Royal College of Physicians in London and at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburg, Scotland. Dr. Holt is a “Professor Visitante” at La Universidad Catolica de Santa Maria in Areguipa, Peru and has also lectured in India.

Dr. Holt is on the editorial board of Functional Esthetics & Restorative Dentistry and has recently published articles on treatment of severely tetracycline-stained dentition, replacement of congenitally missing teeth in adolescents, photography for case evaluation and perio-restorative interface.

Dr. Holt is a member of the ADA, AGD, NC Dental Society, Tri-County Dental Society and Seattle Study Club. He is past president of the Forum for Contemporary Esthetic Dentistry.

Scott DeRossi, D.M.D., associate professor and chair of the MCG Department of Oral Health and Diagnostic Sciences, received his DMD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, where he completed post-doctoral training in oral medicine. At Penn, he was assistant professor of oral medicine, director of the oral medicine residency program and recipient of the Earl Bank Hoyt Teaching Award.

Dr. DeRossi is a co-author of Burket’s Oral Medicine textbook. He has lectured and published numerous articles, textbook chapters and monographs on all aspects of oral medicine, including TMJ and oro-facial pain, medicine and dentistry, salivary gland diseases and oral mucosal disease. He achieved Diplomate status from the American Board of Oral Medicine in 1999.

Gary Holmes, D.M.D., Course Director, is an associate professor in the MCG Department of Oral Rehabilitation. He is an alumnus of the MCG School of Dentistry and Graduate Studies. Dr. Holmes joined the MCG faculty after 10 years of private practice and military contracting and maintains a private practice in the intramural faculty dental practice. He is the course director of the freshman Dental Anatomy and Occlusion class and teaches in Operative Dentistry, Dental Materials and Complete Dentures.

Dr. Holmes is a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He is a past-president of the eastern district of the Georgia Dental Association.

Oral Manifestations of Systemic Disease: The Window to General
Health–Dr. Scott DeRossi

Many systemic diseases have oral manifestations. Since the days of Hippocrates, the oral cavity has been considered a window to systemic health. These oral manifestations must be properly recognized if a patient is to receive appropriate diagnosis and referral for treatment. The presentation will summarize known and newly-described oral manifestations of several systemic disorders. Lesions of the oral mucosa, tongue, gingiva, dentition, periodontium and salivary glands will be highlighted.

Achieving Predictable Excellence in Esthetic Reconstruction

(Part 1) –Dr. Larry Holt

When treatment results exceed patient expectations, success is achieved. Predictable success requires a thorough understanding of patient wants and desires. Appropriate pre-treatment evaluation and analysis precedes active treatment. Dr. Holt will present the necessary steps in planning and implementation to provide uncompromising esthetic reconstruction. Emphasis will be placed on the use of photography to gain critical information pertinent to diagnosis, planning and treatment implementation. He will explore the value of diagnostic wax ups and provisional restorations, the proving ground for all subsequent steps in the restorative process. Gingival anatomy, physiology and esthetic contour will be studied in relation to restorative dentistry. The critical relationship between function and esthetics will be explored. Light dynamics and material selection are critical elements to be discussed. Course
participants will gain confidence in “starting with the end in mind.” A comprehensive diagnosis and treatment eliminates the mystery in delivering excellent treatment.

New Diagnostic Tools for Oral Cancer Detection

Dr. Scott DeRossi

This multimedia program will review the epidemiology, risk factors, clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment of precancerous and cancerous lesions of the oral cavity. Oral cancer is associated with significant morbidity; five-year survival rates for oral cancer are poor, primarily because of delayed diagnosis. Early recognition of
precancerous lesions is vital. Newer diagnostic techniques for precancerous and cancerous lesions will be reviewed, including hands-on participation of new methods.

Non-Odontogenic Toothache: A Guide to Accurate Diagnosis
Dr. Scott DeRossi

The clinician should never automatically assume all toothaches are caused by pulpal or periodontal disease. Numerous non-odontogenic sources are responsible for tooth pain, and suspicion that its origin is not in the pulp or supporting tissues is an important step toward proper identification and management. This course will review the clinical features of sources of non-odontogenic toothache and discuss their diagnostic and management challenges.
