Dental Update
for the General PractitionerBrasstown Valley Resort
October 19-21, 2007
Brasstown Valley Resort

This should be another great year to come to the mountains and enjoy the beautiful scenery, as well as listen to some excellent continuing education from the “west coast”.

This year we are featuring Dr. Jim Dunn, a faculty member at Loma Linda University. Dr. Dunn is noted for his digital photography and for his esthetic composite restorations. A very practical dentist involved in clinical research, Dr. Dunn will lecture on digital photography, as well as anterior and posterior composite restorations from start to finish. Dr. Dunn will also conduct a limited attendance hands-onrestorative workshop on Saturday afternoon for anterior composite placement and polishing techniques. Dr. Dunn and the course are generously supported by Caulk/Dentsply, as well as Brasseler USA. Workshop participants will be using Caulk composite restorative materials and Brasseler electric handpieces/burs to practice the techniques shown in the lectures.

In addition to the restorative focus, Dr. Roy Rockman, director of the Pediatric Dentistry Resident Program at MCG will cover the current treatments for dental trauma. Hhe will also share some of the challenges of special needs children and adults. Lastly, we will have some information about tray designs for bleaching and for caries control.

Plan to attend the special Brasseler reception to enjoy the dental fellowship after the sun has gone down over the beautiful mountain scenery.

Hope you can join us in the mountains in the fall!
Thanks, Van
Dr. Van Haywood, DMD, Course Director

8:00 Tray Fabrication and Bleaching
Dr. Van Haywood
The “secret” to successful bleaching is the tray design and proper fabrication technique. Tray designs include traditional custom trays with and without reservoirs or scalloping, single tooth trays, thermoplastic trays and disposable trays. Indications and  techniques for each type will be discussed, as well as how tray delivery of different materials can alleviate sensitivity, or control caries in elderly patients, radiation patients or orthodontic patients.

Digital Photography for the Dental Professional
Dr. James Dunn

Dental photography must follow the art guidelines of professional photographic style: lighting, composition and exposure. The  dentist takes photographs for dental diagnosis, records and peer or referral purposes, but patients also appreciate photographs for their benefit which show their improved appearance after treatment. Dentists now take portraits of patients which follow professional studio guidelines of attractiveness rather than unattractive  "medical” portraits. The focus is on producing high quality images based on the level of photographs our patients are confronted with through the media and internet. Storage, management,  modification and use of photographs in a “visually communicative”
practice will be explained.

8:00 Anterior and Posterior Conservative Tooth Colored Restorations
2007

Dr. James Dunn
In an era of full mouth ceramic reconstructions, many patients and dentists want to improve dental esthetics and are  increasingly asking for “tooth colored” anterior and posterior restorations while still conserving natural tooth structure. This course will review the materials and techniques used in esthetic dental bonded procedures and vital tooth whitening and the physical attractiveness phenomenon which motivates many patients. The discussion will include the latest research-validated information on dentin liners, sealers, bonding systems and
treatments. Polymerization techniques (as to which method is better: slow and low or high and fast) will be explained. Both anterior and posterior tooth colored direct and indirect composite bonding will be discussed with natural shaded composites as well as composite placement and finishing.
12:15 Adjourn
2:00

Optional Hands-on Workshop (Limited to 20 dentists): Anterior
Composites for Natural, Lifelike Restorations

Dr. James Dunn

Composite materials are available which can replicate natural tooth shades. The new “natural shaded” composites have a wide range of clear enamel and more opaque dentin shades and can be polished to a high surface gloss. By placing these new direct placement composites with a recipe of enamel and dentin  shades, the restorations can be an esthetic competitor to  ceramic restorations while conserving tooth structure. This workshop will allow the dentist to practice placement of simple and complex multi-shaded composites on a typodont tooth with natural shaded composite materials using both average and new bleach light shades.
