PURPOSE
This Lecture Course features a wide variety of topics from diagnosis to clinical care in multiple disciplines of dentistry including the prevention and management of medical emergencies in the dental office.
It is the goal of this course to offer exceptional continuing education that can be easily and readily implemented into the dental practice to improve efficiency and productivity.
OBJECTIVES

CO-COURSE DIRECTORS
Van Haywood, D.M.D., professor in the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry Department of Oral Rehabilitation, is a 1974 alumnus of MCG. He practiced in Augusta, Georgia and taught at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry before joining the MCG faculty in 1993.
Barry Hammond, D.M.D., a 1986 graduate of the Medical
University of South Carolina College of Dental Medicine,
completed a general practice residency in Chapel Hill, N.C. Dr.
Hammond maintained a private practice for 15 years, emphasizing
restorative and esthetic dentistry. He is an L.D. Pankey Institute
alumnus and taught for several years with the Ross Nash Institute for Dental
Learning in Charlotte, N.C. Dr. Hammond joined the MCG School of Dentistry
faculty in 2006 and lectures on esthetic techniques and materials and the role of
occlusion in predictability. He serves as Assistant Director of the CE Advisory
Committee for the School of Dentistry. Dr. Hammond is the University Advisory
Council Member for the Medical College of Georgia to the American Academy
of Cosmetic Dentistry. Other organizational memberships include the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry and the American Dental
Education Association.
MEDICAL COLLEGE OF GEORGIA FACULTY
Dr. Philip S. Baker, received his B.S. in biology from Regis University and his D.D.S. Loyola University School of Dentistry. From 1978-85, he taught removable prosthodontics part-time at Loyola while maintaining a full-time private practice. He obtained his certificate in prosthodontics from MCG in 1987, then taught at the University of Florida College of Dentistry before joining MCG in 1998 as an associate professor in undergraduate and graduate prosthodontics. Dr. Baker is board certified in prosthodontics and a fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists. He is a past president and diplomat for the Georgia Section of the American College of Prosthodontists, and is secretary of the East Georgia Chapter of the Georgia Section.
Dr. Emily Y. Chen, instructor in Oral Rehabilitation at the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Chen earned her dental degree and certificate in Prosthodontics from the University of Illinois College of Dentistry. Dr. Chen teaches occlusion, fixed, removable, and implant prosthodontics while maintaining a successful intramural faculty practice. She is an active member of various dental organizations including the American Dental Association and the American College of Prosthodontists. She has several publications in the areas of dental materials and prosthodontics.
Dr. Henry W. Ferguson, vice chair and director of residency training in the MCG department of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery, received his dental degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. After completing dental school, Dr. Ferguson entered into active duty with the U.S. Army Dental Corps. Dr. Ferguson completed a residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the Eisenhower Army Medical Center. After retiring from the Army in 2004, he joined the MCG faculty, where he has a joint appointment as an associate professor in the School of Medicine, Department of Surgery. Dr. Ferguson is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, a member of the American Dental Association and fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the National Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology and the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology.
Dr. Sajitha Kalathingal, assistant professor of oral diagnosis and patient services, earned a dental degree from Mangalore University and a master’s degree in oral and maxillofacial radiology from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. She teaches predoctoral and graduate radiology courses and manages radiology clinics. She also maintains a private practice with advanced two- and three-dimensional imaging capabilities. She researches digital imaging and applications of three-dimensional imaging in various dental disciplines.
Dr. Robert J. Loushine, professor and director of MCG’s Endodontic Postgraduate Program, received his dental degree from the University of Minnesota and his postgraduate training in endodontics from the U.S. Army Endodontic Program. He has over 30 years of clinical experience and over 20 years of teaching experience. Dr. Loushine has lectured internationally and has co-authored a surgical textbook and published over 50 articles on surgical and microscopic endodontics. Dr. Loushine is a diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics and is a past consultant to the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Prior to joining the MCG faculty, he was the Endodontic Postgraduate Program director in the U.S. Army at Fort Gordon, Ga.
Dr. Jan K. Mitchell, associate professor and director of MCG’s Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency, earned her D.D.S. degree from Emory University and served 26-year in the U.S. Navy, where she completed a two-year residency in comprehensive dentistry, twice receiving the Award for Excellence in Restorative Dentistry. She earned a master’s degree in higher education from the George Washington University, teaching in the comprehensive dentistry residency while serving on the White House support team. Dr. Mitchell is a diplomate of the Federal Services Board of General Dentistry. She is certified by the American Board of Operative Dentistry, and is currently president.
Dr. Michael E. Pruett, assistant professor of oral rehabilitation, vice chair of hospital dentistry and director of the General Practice Residency at MCG, received his D.M.D. from MCG and completed a two-year general practice residency at the University of Virginia. He was the director of dentistry at Mount Sinai Hospital and assistant director of the general practice residency at Saint Francis Hospital Medical Center in Hartford, Conn. He has 14 years of experience placing and restoring dental implants and maintains a busy private practice with emphasizing hospital dentistry, managing medically compromised patients and sedation dentistry. Dr. Pruett is a fellow in the International College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and is a member of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry.

Dr. Jacob K. Stern, assistant professor of periodontics at MCG, received his dental, master’s and bachelor’s degree at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. A diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. Dr. Stern completed his graduate training in Periodontics and a LAZZARA Fellowship in Implantology at the University of Pennsylvania.
