PURPOSE
This educational offering acquaints physicians and other appropriate office staff with strategies to efficiently and effectively manage a medical practice. The guide is divided into modules, each covering a different area of practice management.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This correspondence course offers individual modules to teach efficient practice management. The module text is followed by a bibliography of references. Following the references are case studies for "hands-on" learning. After each module, the learner responds to a variety of evaluation activities, including case studies.

These responses are returned to course faculty to be reviewed. Enrollees will receive from faculty an assessment of their responses as well as comments and suggestions.

Module 3 - Legal Aspects
Module 4 - Quality Management (TQM)
Module 5 - Automation
Module 6 - Office Administration
Strategic Business Plan 

FACULTY
All course instructors hold appointments in the Department of Health Information Management at the Medical College of Georgia, School of Allied Health Sciences in Augusta, Georgia.

Carol Campbell, D.B.A., R.H.I.A., chairs the Department of Health Information Management (HIM) and she serves as the primary course instructor for the Physician’s Guide to Practice Management. She holds a doctoral degree in business administration and is a credentialed Registered Health Information Administrator. Dr. Campbell’s areas of expertise include business administration, human resource management and mediation.

Amanda Carroll-Barefield, M.S.A., R.H.I.A., L.N.H.A., is an Instructor in the Department of HIM. She has a Master of Science degree in Administration, is a licensed nursing home administrator and is a Registered Health Information Administrator. Ms. Carroll-Barefield’s areas of expertise include legal aspects of health information management, health care delivery systems and data management.

Jim Condon, R.H.I.A., C.T.R., is an Instructor in the Department of HIM. He is credentialed as a Registered Health Information Administrator and is a Certified Tumor Registrar. Mr. Condon’s areas of expertise include record processing practices, health care finance and fundamentals of database design.

Lori Prince, M.S.A., R.H.I.A., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of HIM. She has a Master of Science Degree in Administration and is a Registered Health Information Administrator. Ms. Prince’s areas of expertise include quality management, reimbursement and coding systems.

Sherry Smith, M.S.A., R.H.I.A, is an Instructor in the Department of HIM. She has a Master of Science degree in Administration with a concentration in Information Resource Management. She holds a Graduate Certificate in Health Services Administration. Ms. Smith is credentialed as a Registered Health Information Administrator. Her areas of expertise include database design, information systems analysis and implementation.

CREDIT
The Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 32 hours in Category 1 credit toward the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those hours he/she actually spent in the activity.

For other health care professionals: The instructional time in this course is  a maximum of 32 hours. Upon successful completion of the entire course, 3.2 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be awarded by the Medical College of Georgia.
