Assessing Anesthetic Options for Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy
Reneé Graham, R.D.H., M.Ed.
Pain management is an essential component of periodontal therapy. This  course will provide the information necessary to make an anesthetic choice
based on each patient’s needs. This course will also include information on a new, non-injectable local anesthetic for scaling and/or root planing.

Course Objectives

  • Discuss the development of local anesthetics in dentistry.
  • Explain the neurophysiology of pain conduction.
  • Identify methods to manage pain perception.
  • Understand the action of local anesthetic drugs on pain conduction.
  • Grasp the physiological effects of vasoconstriction.
  • Identify the benefits and limitations of a new non-injectable anesthetic option.
  • Conduct a needs assessment to determine the appropriate anesthetic option for each patient.
  • Accurately document the administration of local anesthesia in treatment records.

Dental Caries: Advances in Detection and Disease Management
Reneé Graham, R.D.H., M.Ed.
This course will address trends in caries epidemiology, new diagnostic technologies and minimally invasive approaches to managing this chronic disease. Early detection enables a preventive rather than surgical approach.

Course Objectives

  • Recognize trends in caries epidemiology.
  • Implement caries risk-assessment tools.
  • Differentiate between medical (preventive) management and surgical (restorative) management of caries.
  • Compare sensitivity, specificity and reliability of caries-detection techniques.
  • Discuss remineralizing agents to arrest or reverse demineralization.

Reneé Graham, R.D.H., M.Ed.
Reneé Graham, Southeast Clinical Educator for DENTSPLY
International, Professional Division, received a dental hygiene degree from Darton College and Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Education from Valdosta State University. She has 19 years of clinical experience in general and periodontal practices and 11 years of academic experience. She directed dental programs at Valdosta Technical College in Valdosta, Georgia for 10 years. She is a site visitor for the Commission on Dental Accreditation and a member of the Georgia Dental Hygiene Educators Association.
