Career Opportunities in Health Science
Family Nurse
Practitioner
Master of Science in Nursing
Print Version
(2 page PDF file)
This program prepares advanced-practice nurses to provide primary health care
to clients, families and communities. All students take core courses covering
theoretical foundations for nursing practice, health systems and models,
advanced pathophysiology, advanced pharmacology, nursing research and advanced
health assessment. Clinical courses emphasize the care of adult, pediatric and
geriatric patients and their families.
Career Opportunities
Nurse practitioners have practiced health promotion, disease prevention,
early detection and health management in the United States for almost 40 years.
Today, they can practice in every state in the country with varying degrees of
independence and physician collaboration. Most family nurse practitioners are
generalists working in primary ambulatory care settings such as health clinics,
medical offices or managed-care organizations. However, more and more are
combining their experience as registered nurses with their education as advanced
practice nurses. This allows them to move into other health care settings,
including specialty clinics, emergency rooms, oncology, cardiac or renal care,
women’s health, family planning, occupational health and intensive care. Other
settings include clinical research, education and public health. MCG students
discuss their professional goals with faculty mentors and may pursue elective
studies toward that end.MCG’s Program
The primarily online program is offered on MCG’s main campus in Augusta and
in the Georgia cities of Athens and Columbus via on-site faculty,
distance-learning and interactive Web instruction. Clinical assignments are made
within the geographic location of the student’s home, with sites in and around
Augusta, Athens and Columbus, as well as in other Georgia cities such as Atlanta
and/or in the neighboring states of Alabama and South Carolina.
This program can be completed full time in just under two years or part time
in approximately two-and-a-half to three years.
Students with a master’s degree in nursing who want to train as a family
nurse practitioner generally are required to take just three core courses:
advanced health assessment, advanced pathophysiology and advanced pharmacology.
They must take all required clinical family nurse practitioner classes.
The MCG School of Nursing is fully accredited by the National League for
Nursing. Graduates are eligible for national certification by the American
Nurses’ Credentialing Center and the American Association of Nurse
Practitioners. MCG graduates can practice in any of the 50 United States.

Frequently Asked Question
Professional RN Experience A frequently asked
question by prospective students is What kind of
nursing experience do I need to become a
FNP? Generally, applicants are required to
complete a minimum of one year in practice as an RN
prior to beginning the clinical courses in the FNP
program. Most students have at least 2-3 years
experience.
The most successful FNP students have clinical
experience working in settings
that have allowed them a strong opportunity for
independent decision making
and clinical skill acquisition for all
ages and their families. Experience in
assertiveness and communicating with all
levels of the health care team has proven to be
extremely helpful to students.
While FNP students often have experience in
hospital and/or intensive care settings, it is not
required nor necessarily an advantage. Experience in
any setting that promotes the development of
professional confidence, clinical competence,
communication skills and self awareness is
essential for success in the FNP program.
An excellent experience involves public health
care.
