Academic & Research Computing Advisory Board
Meeting Minutes
August 27, 2001

Present: R. Mackert, Chair, R. Baker, G. Bentley, C. Billman, C. Cassels, R. Cibirka, D. Hatmaker, V. Haywood, A. Hinton, M. Litaker, M. Miller, F. Omar, M. Owen, K. Rindt, K. Stephens, S. Vogel, C. White.

The meeting was called to order at 1:00 pm.

The minutes were approved.

Dr. Mackert introduced Dr. Mike Gabridge who spoke on intellectual property issues.

Dr. Gabridge provided an overview of patents and copyrights, their requirements and differences. Derivatives to extend copyright timelines were discussed. The breadth of Internet use has reduced control of intellectual property and created difficulties with copyright issues. Dr. Gabridge explained the “fair use” doctrine and how it relates to using intellectual property without the owners permission.

Dr. Gabridge discussed inventorship versus ownership and the concept of “working for hire”. At the Medical College of Georgia, intellectual property created within the scope of your employment description is considered the property of MCG. This would include courseware provided for distance learning. Irrespective of who developed course materials, these materials are considered the property of MCG. It was recommended if you would leave employment at MCG, you should secure permission to copy and utilize any intellectual properties developed while at MCG.

A brief question and answer period followed Dr. Gabridge’s presentation.

The next meeting of ACAB will be held at 1:00 pm on September 24, 2001 in room AB-211 in the Library.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:00 pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Roman Cibirka
Secretary, Academic and Research Computing Advisory Board.
