July 23, 2001
Present: R. Mackert, Chair, A. Albritton, G. Bentley, C. Billman, D.
Hatmaker, V. Haywood, A. Hinton, M. Litaker, M. Owen, K. Rindt, S. Vogel
Absent: R. Baker, C. Cassels, R. Cibirka, M. Miller, F. Omar, K. Stephens,
C. White
The meeting was called to order at 1:04 p.m..
The minutes of the June 25, 2001 meeting were approved as amended.
Dr. Mackert asked if there were any agenda items to be considered from each
school, based on meetings with faculty and other forms of input. This
protocol will be included at future meetings. Nursing had questions about
the school technology fee, and Allied Health wanted to know institutional
policy, direction, and long-term plans under our new leadership.
Clare Billman reported that the Office of Educational Design and Development
(OEDD) had been restructured. Instead of reporting to Doogie Howser, she now
reports to Dale Chernich. Formerly she and OEDD reported to Doogie, but now
her group, OEDD, and Doogie’s (who now has responsibility for network) each
report to Dale.
Dr. Mackert distributed a written summary of his meeting with Dr. Barry
Goldstein and Doogie Howser and began a review of these notes. Most of the
comments were self-explanatory, but additional comments to the notes
starting from the top of the list are as follows:
- ACAB input on Student Technology Fee: Email Rod with requests
as per deadline; Nursing cannot determine how the student who was on the
Mandatory Student Fee Committee was selected, nor how to replace those who
have graduated. Possibly Dr. Randy Butterbaugh can shed light on this
issue.
- Considerations of PC requirement: It was thought that funds for
purchasing a PC are already included in the calculation of students’
financial aid packages, and hence there would be no benefit to students of
requiring them to purchase a computer. Rod Mackert will check with
Antoinette Esposito about this matter.
- Potential for leasing: Some other institutions that require PCs
no longer supply them, only the minimal requirements. Can we get Doogie to
list minimal requirements for our campus, to include WebCT and other uses?
- Showcase of teaching: Some is already being done. Clare does a
course two times a year; there is a WebCT and Web users group. Almost
every school or department (in Medicine) has a computer person: It may be
good to get those persons into a group, both to help one another, and to
help the faculty. Examples where one group may benefit from another are in
PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) technology. The goal of the Faculty
Development Institute was to supposedly to train a few faculty so that
these faculty could train many in their schools. One question raised was
how the off-campus faculty’s needs were being met. It was pointed out that
the 24 dial-up lines for student web access were in operation, and that a
similar arrangement was being considered for faculty. Clare is to find out
the number and availability of this service.
- Online course for web technology: Clare reported that there
were three courses on how to use WebCT available online, including the
basic WebCT introduction course.
- Bandwidth and email: Concern was expressed by faculty not on
GroupWise about phasing out of the POP3 server in IMMAG, and the influence
on those faculty using this resource. Steve Vogel requested some contact
and information with those on POP3 servers who will be phased out. It was
unclear what file sizes can be sent both on campus and off campus, and
what the campus limitations exist for incoming and outgoing on GroupWise.
Clare reported that AOL Instant Messenger can be used to send large files.
However, there are other problems with this technology in protecting your
computer.
Time expired on the meeting before all the points could be discussed. The
meeting was adjourned at 2:00 p.m. Plans are to continue with the attached
list of points from Dr. Mackert’s meeting with Dr. Goldstein and Doogie
Howser when time permits. Dr. Mike Gabridge will present at the next meeting
concerning intellectual property and web-based teaching. Doogie Howser may
be able to attend in October.
Next Meeting: August 27th, 2001 (ACAB meets the fourth Monday of each month)
at 1:00 p.m. in room AB-211, Greenblatt Library.
Respectfully submitted,
Van Haywood (for Roman Cibirka)
