Biography

Dr. Daniel W. Rahn, nationally recognized researcher, clinician and seasoned administrator, became the seventh president of the Medical College of Georgia June 2001. As of July 2006, Dr. Rahn also serves in the newly created position of senior vice chancellor for health and medical programs for the University System of Georgia.

Prior to his appointment as MCG president, Dr. Rahn served as vice dean for clinical affairs for the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine as well as senior vice president for medical affairs and chief medical officer for MCG Health, Inc., which manages MCG's clinical facilities. He assumed his duties as vice dean for clinical affairs in the medical school in 1995.

At MCG, Dr. Rahn also has served as director of the Center for Healthcare Improvement, a research initiative between MCG and BlueCross and BlueShield of Georgia exploring how to optimize health care. In July 2000, he assumed the additional responsibilities as senior vice president and chief medical officer for MCG Health, Inc.

Dr. Rahn came to MCG from Yale University School of Medicine in 1991 as vice chairman and director of clinical affairs for the Department of Medicine and as program director for the internal medicine residency program.

He began his professional career in 1979 at Yale and remained on the university’s clinical faculty while he was in a private medical practice in Connecticut from 1981 to 1988. He rejoined the Yale faculty in 1988, where his appointments included clinical director of the Lyme Disease Program, director of clinical training in rheumatology, and director of faculty practice for the Department of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Rahn earned a bachelor of arts degree in 1972 and a medical degree in 1976, both from Yale University. He completed his medical residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital and his postdoctoral fellowship in rheumatology at Yale.

Dr. Rahn is a member of the University Health System Consortium Medical Leadership Community Steering Committee, the Georgia Cancer Coalition Select Committee, the Association of Academic Health Centers and the Georgia Department of Community Health Cardiovascular Technical Advisory Committee. He serves on the boards of directors of the Georgia Research Alliance, the Georgia Cancer Coalition and the Central Savannah River Area Regional Educational Service, and on the board of trustees of Georgia Health Decisions and the board of the Walton Rehabilitation Institute.

Dr. Rahn serves as chair of the Health Strategies Council for the State of Georgia and chairs the Health Workforce Shortages Advisory Committee for the Association of Academic Health Centers. He recently chaired the University System of Georgia appointed Task Force on Health Professions Education, which analyzed the state’s need for health professionals and made recommendations. He also chairs the State Commission on the Efficacy of the Certificate of Need Program. 

He is a reviewer for Annals of Internal Medicine, the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association, Journal of Rheumatology, American Journal of Family Practice, and the American Journal of Medicine. He is a fellow of the American College of Rheumatology and the American College of Physicians and a member of the American College of Physician Executives, the American College of Physicians, and the Southern Medical Association.

The MCG president is a national expert on Lyme disease, for which he has received a number of research grants. He has made repeat appearances in the Castle Connolly Guide to “America's Top Doctors." He has served as a volunteer on a number of medical missions to the Ukraine, Ecuador, and Nigeria.

He and his wife Lana have three children, Jason, Rebecca, and Zachary.
