Expand the capacity and reach of our educational assets
As Georgia’s health sciences university, MCG works in Augusta and beyond to ensure that we meet our statewide mission. We are growing, expanding enrollment in all five schools, in response to state needs—never simply expansion for its own sake. This area of focus, perhaps more than any other, requires partnership. We embrace our role in advancing better health for Georgians, and we eagerly partner with other entities to optimize our collective potential.
Expansion-related initiatives include:
- Increasing the School of Medicine class size statewide to 1,200 by 2020 (an increase of approximately 60 percent) and establishing 100-200 new residency positions in association with campuses in Augusta, Athens, Albany and Savannah
- Incrementally increasing the School of Dentistry class size from 63 to 100, with a new building erected to accommodate the growth
- Linking Georgia’s Area Health Education Centers to educational expansion
- Offering convenient statewide access to programs to alleviate a statewide and national nursing shortage, including a doctoral nurse practitioner program and a program designed to attract college graduates with non-nursing degrees to the field
- Expanding allied health programs to improve Georgians’ access to health care statewide
