About the Vice President for Instruction and Associate Provost for
Academic Affairs
The Vice President for Instruction and Associate
Provost for Academic Affairs serves as the Provost’s chief advisor on
matters relating to academic affairs, strategic management of educational
programs, instructional effectiveness and academic assessment. The Officer
oversees academic program development, comprehensive program assessment,
programmatic accreditation processes, educational outreach programs, the
faculty career development process, including faculty appointment, tenure,
promotion, and periodic peer review and the interprofessional faculty
development initiative. The Officer promotes efforts to enhance teaching
and learning, academic and professional excellence, improvement of the
overall quality of the academic experience. This occurs through the units
that report to this office, as well as, teaching initiatives undertaken
directly with schools, colleges, and individual faculty members. The
Officer is administratively responsible for the Georgia Statewide Area
Health Education Center Program Office, Center for Patient and Family
Centered Care, Division of Continuing Education, Library, the Center for
Patient Safety and the Division of Visual and Instructional Design. The
Vice President for Instruction and Associate Provost for Academic Affairs is
a member of the President's Cabinet and serves, in the absence of Provost, as
Chief Academic Officer. The Officer also has other duties as assigned by
the Provost.
Area Health Education Center
(AHEC) - A partnership coordinated
between Medical College of Georgia and Mercer University School of Medicine,
the Georgia Statewide AHEC Network is a complex, multi-disciplinary effort
which responds to the problems of health professionals supply and
distribution in rural and underserved areas of the state.
Since 1984, the Georgia Statewide AHEC Network has
represented a growing partnership of health providers, health professions
students, educators, state agencies, and communities joined together with a
commitment to resolve these problems through educational support to health
professionals in the field, both as students and as practitioners.
Continuing Education
-
provides professional development and life-long learning for health care
professionals including Grand Rounds, one-day and multi-day live
conferences, hands-on workshops, jointly sponsored activities,
correspondence courses and web-based offerings
Robert B. Greenblatt, M.D. Library
- The Greenblatt Library provides mission critical support of teaching,
research and clinical care for the MCG community. With its unique role as
the public health sciences library of Georgia, it also serves as a regional
resource library for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine.
The Greenblatt Library uses advanced technology to
provide access to an ever-increasing virtual library of online journals,
databases and other resources in addition to preserving the institution's
printed heritage. With service as its hallmark, the Library offers
innovative technologies, educational programs and customized services on
site 98 hours per week and through the web on a 24/7 basis.
Center for Patient & Family Centered Care
- MCG is leading the nation in patient- and
family-centered care. By encouraging patients and families to become an
integral part of the care team, we are improving the way health care is
delivered. It's an important new philosophy in medicine and one we are proud
to be leading.
Visual and Instructional Design
- (VID) supports faculty by integrating the art and science of teaching and
research. VID offers professional graphic art
services, video productions, scantron testing services,
photography, and professional research and instructional support.
The Vice President & Associate Provost has responsibility for the following:

Advisory to the Provost for strategic
oversight and management of academic programs

Responsibility for ensuring and optimizing
instructional effectiveness for academic programs requisite for
accountability to external agencies and as measured against defined
benchmarks

Promote continual quality enhancement to the
institution’s academic programs and the units that support the academic
mission
-
Facilitate the academic program review and
assessment process while ensuring an environment of continual quality
improvement
-
Serve as the institutional SACS
accreditation liaison
-
Provide leadership and generate growth for
the educational and academic support efforts of AHEC, Continuing
Education, Center for Patient and Family Centered Care, Library and VID.

Provide administrative oversight and
guidance to the academic program revision process and development of
agreements with external agencies (MOU’s)

Provide administrative leadership to the
academic program development process
-
Oversee faculty career development
processes, including promotion, tenure, and post tenure review
-
Oversee recruitment and selection of the
institution’s nominees for the University System of Georgia Award
opportunities
-
Provide oversight to the retention,
progression, and graduation (RPG) initiative
