RE: Copyrighted materials
Copyright is a form of protection grounded in the U.S. Constitution and granted by law for original works of authorship fixed in a tangible medium of expression. Copyright covers both published and unpublished works. According to the copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code), the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. (http://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap1.html#107)
The basic rule of thumb, elaborated in the Regents Guide to Understanding Copyright & Educational Fair Use, is that a copyrighted work can be used or copied for educational purposes so long as the use is not solely a substitute for purchasing a copy of the work. (http://www.usg.edu/legal/copyright/)
I verify I am in compliance with guidelines of the copyright law.
