Irradiator
Sources Description |
 |
The irradiator exposes the sample to gamma radiation
from two radioactive sources. |
 |
The sources are secured within sliding drawers
located symmetrically above and below the sample chamber. |
 |
The drawers are held within steel encased lead
shields. |
 |
Ball screws, driven by an electric motor, move the source drawers from the shielded to the
irradiate position. |

Irradiator Drive Mechanism
 |
The radioactive sources are contained in double
encapsulated stainless steel capsules. |
 |
The capsules are Special Form Certified by the
United States Department of Transportation. |
 |
The radioactive material is in the form of cesium
chloride and has a half- life of approximately thirty years. |
 |
MCG Radiation Safety Personnel perform quarterly
radiation dose rate surveys and semi-annual leak test surveys on the sources. |
