About the MCG Research Institute (MCGRI)
Mission Statement
To serve the Medical College of Georgia by enhancing its mission of
excellence in research, teaching and service.
As the applicant and awardee institution for most sponsored proposals
developed by MCG faculty, MCGRI is supported by the
pre-award and
post-award
staff of the Office of Grants and Contracts. As each
project is funded, MCGRI enters into a subcontract with MCG for the
performance of the work. Sponsor payments are received by MCGRI and paid to
MCG. MCGRI retains a portion of the Facilities and Administrative costs
paid by sponsors to support its operations and to fund the reinvestment
programs identified below:
- MCGRI Research Incentive Program –This is the
largest component of the MCGRI budget. Initiated in 1982, the program was
established as an incentive to stimulate MCG faculty to seek extramural
support and continues to be identified by investigators as an important
factor in their decision to come to MCG.
- MCGRI Grants Program – MCGRI provides partial
support to the MCG Combined Intramural Grants Program (CIGP), which
operates under the authority of the Vice President for Research. The CIGP
is chaired by Dr. Leslie Fuchs, Professor of Pharmacology and
Toxicology. A standing proposal review committee modeled on NIH study
sections provides feedback to applicants, with ad hoc and external
reviewers recruited to secure needed expertise as appropriate. The Vice
President for Research and the Dean of the School of Medicine form the
CIGP Funding Council. The CIGP targets meritorious research that has a
strong likelihood of developing extramural support. It encompasses
programs based at MCG as well as collaborations with researchers at the
Georgia Institute of Technology (the Biomedical Research and Education
Program, or BREP). The CIGP also oversees review and award processes on
the MCG campus for the Medical College of Georgia-University of Georgia
inter-institutional grant collaborative.
- Health Research Associates – Since 1998 MCGRI has engaged the
consulting services of Health Research Associates to assist faculty in
developing fundable research proposals. Consultants provide one or more
on-site workshops each year, and faculty are additionally encouraged to
work one-on-one with HRA consultants who have considerable experience in
obtaining research funding and who can provide insight into granting
processes. For additional information, contact the Office of Grants and
Contracts at 721-2592.
- MCGRI additionally provides funding to the Medical College of Georgia
to support activities in the Graduate School, to contribute to MCG’s
tuition reimbursement program, and to support a research ethics lecture
program.
