A CNL is a nurse who will receive the essential nursing knowledge needed for the registered nurse licensure examination (NCLEX) and will graduate with a Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN). The CNL graduate is considered a generalist (not an advanced practice nurse) and will possess nursing knowledge, comprehension of the infrastructure of the health care system, clinical decision-making skills, resource management strategies, and the ability to manage complex information.
Goals of the program are to prepare:
-
nurses that create an environment of clinical excellence that results in improved outcomes.
-
clinical decision-makers.
-
nurses that become engaged in peer practice and the interdisciplinary health care team.
- leaders who facilitate and assure individualized, evidence-based, and highly effective care to patients and families.

Initially, the CNL Program was instituted in collaboration with MCG Health and University Health Care Systems in Augusta. Today, our CNL partners have grown to include: Athens Regional Medical Center, St. Mary’s Hospital (Athens), the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center (Augusta), Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital (Albany) and the Medical Center of Central Georgia (Macon). All of these partner institutions enthusiastically support the CNL education efforts as well as provide possible career opportunities for our CNL graduates. These clinical partners enhance the development of the role of the CNL throughout the state of Georgia.
