Dr. Peter F. Buckley named Associate Dean for Leadership Development

Dr. Peter F. Buckley, Chair of  the Medical College of Georgia Department of Psychiatry and Health Behavior, has been named the inaugural associate dean for leadership development  in the MCG School of Medicine. Dr. Buckley will work with Dean D. Dougles Miller in coordinating all aspects of recruitment for senior leadership  positions in the School  of Medicine . . .

Dr. Erick Messias selected for Global Burden of Disease Study

Dr. Erick Messias, psychiatrist and epidemiologist at the Medical College of Georgia, has been selected to assist in the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries and Risk Factors Study, designed to determine the total burden of more than 150 diseases and injuries and 25 risk factors on people in more than 20 regions of the world . . .

Walsh Medical Media, LLC recently announced that the Department of Psychiatry & Health Behavior journal, Clinical Schizophrenia & Related Psychoses (CS) won first-place gold for Best New Healthcare Business Publication at the MM&M 2008 Awards.

MCG Intramural Grants

Program (IGP) Award

Dr. Anilkumar Pillai received an IGP award in support of the first year of his Scientist Training Program titled, "BDNF/GABA System: A Therapeutic Target for Schizophrenia." Dr. Pillai will use reeler heterozygous mice to test whether the drug cysteamine might be effective in correcting prefrontal cortex-dependent cognitive problems in schizophrenics. The long-term goal of this study is to develop better therapeutic modalities in schizophrenia treatment.

The Department of Psychiatry hosted a Family Cook-Out in the picnic area of the Stoney Building followed by a Greenjackets baseball game to show support for NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness). Click on the link below to view the pictures.

2008 Bert Yancey Mental Health Tournament

Faculty and residents from the Department of Psychiatry & Health Behavior parcipated in the 2008 Bert Yancey Mental Health Tournament held on Monday, October 13, 2008 at the River Golf Club in North Augusta, South Carolina.

The proceeds from this tournament will go toward continuing the work of several Augusta area agencies delivering programs to the mentally challenged.

With the continuing support of the Yancey family, this tournament continues to be a fitting memorial to Bert Yancey and to all who have struggled with mental illness.
