Frequently Asked Questions about the PPG Bylaws Revision

Why did the PPG Board want to change the Bylaws and have the Dean serve as Chair of the Board?

- in order to more closely align PPG and the School of Medicine in a "best practices" model

- the current organizational relationship of PPG/SOM/Hospital is an uncommon model compared to national peers

What are the advantages of more closely aligning the School of Medicine and PPG?

- Facilitates strategic planning and focus on growth of the faculty practice

-Without alignment, the Group and SOM may pursue divergent interests, invest in redundant programs, and engage in activities that may make economic  or academic sense to one or the other component but don't optimally advance the shared missions of the combined enterprise

- Clearly demonstrates that PPG is a cooperative organization with MCG

- Provides a unified entity in interactions with other entities

If the Dean is the Chair of the Board of PPG, does this make it easier for him to "take" PPG's funds? (say, to build a Research building)

- Under the RDP, clinical revenue  flows to and "belongs" to the individual physician RDP account; the Departmental "D-Funds" belong to the Departments. The Bylaws changes do not change this.

- even if a Dean  were so disposed, the Dean and School would seek more appropriate sources of funding for University mission, rather than essentially "self-funding"  an endeavor of this size.

Can we vote to approve only some of the proposed changes in the Bylaws?

- No
