Program StrengthsThe Orthopaedic Program at MCG has many strengths. Each one is related directly to the long history at MCG of a deep commitment to medical education. The Medical College of Georgia was founded in 1828, and like any strong institution, the contributions of many generations of people toward a consistent goal over many years has a compounding effect. In all that time, there has never been a regression, but rather a steady growth. By far the best thing about our program is the day-to-day clinical and professional experience gained by the residents. The program has excellent balance in resident experience. Residents are key members of their team in the clinical assessment, decision-making, and treatment of our patients. They spend every day with their faculty allowing for an intimate knowledge of their development as orthopaedic surgeons; and therefore, a natural graduated individualized progression in their responsibility resulting in most senior residents functioning like colleagues. Our graduating residents almost universally have great success in their orthopaedic career. The residents are not simply observing a faculty member nor are they practicing unsupervised. Our program has a good distribution of resident workload, with plenty of clinical experience, but still enough time off to have a happy personal life. The residents recognize that the time they spend at work is an excellent investment in their education, and that what they get out of the program exceeds the work burden. These factors taken together have resulted in a program where there is great pride among the residents and a sense of ownership in the program. There is an amazing collegiality among the residents and a close relationship with the faculty. Our program has a very good balance with regard to clinical material, and a stable faculty of highly qualified subspecialty trained individuals who have a serious commitment to orthopaedic education as well as excellent patient care. Additionally, we have an excellent orthopaedic library and state of the art computers with Internet high-speed links. Our hospitals are modern, well-equipped, and located on one medical campus.
Also on the campus is a state of the art major medical library, and all of the
basic science departments and research facilities of the medical school. |
