AAMC President Urges Graduates to Embody Ideals

A diploma is undoubtedly the most important document Medical College of Georgia graduates will carry into their careers, but the president of the Association of American Medical Colleges urged them to keep another piece of paper close at hand as well.“I challenge you to dig out the personal statement you wrote when you applied to MCG explaining your values and your reasons for pursuing a health care career. Don’t throw it away. Remembering your values means putting them to work,” said Dr. Darrell G. Kirch, who delivered the university’s 2008 commencement address May 9 to 783 graduates—the highest number to receive diplomas since MCG eliminated associate and certain baccalaureate degrees 10 years ago.

Medicine hooding speaker urges graduates to find heroes

Before 171 medical students took the Hippocratic Oath, they were encouraged to find heroes. “Find in your patients the heroes, because they are there,” said Dr. Thomas J. Nasca, executive director and CEO of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. “They are there for you moment to moment if you just look. Find the good in everyone you care for because there is good in everyone.” Dr. Nasca, the keynote speaker at the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine Hooding Ceremony May 8, spoke to medical students about meeting his hero, a patient named Elaine.

Bone marrow donor drive scheduled May 5

First-year Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine students will help cancer patients by hosting their seventh annual bone marrow and stem cell donor drive May 5. The drive, which will be held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the second floor of the MCGHealth Children’s Medical Center, encourages the public, especially minorities, to join the National Marrow Donor Program registry.
