stages of heart failure

Specialized Care for Patients with Heart Failure

Heart failure is the condition that sometimes develops after a patient suffers a heart attack or when a patient has other risk factors. The result is a heart that does not pump blood through the body properly. Heart failure patients often find themselves short of breath and fatigued. With more and more people surviving severe cardiac episodes, MCG has devoted resources to address their condition. Through careful medical management and device therapy, heart failure can often be controlled and the patient can enjoy a better quality of life.

Device Therapy

When medication proves unable to control heart failure, your doctor may recommend implanting a pacemaker or defibrillator. The physicians at MCG are experienced at implanting and managing these devices, which have proved to be very useful in controlling heart failure.

Heart Transplant

When heart failure progresses beyond the point of medical treatment, some patients may be candidates to receive a heart transplant. The heart transplant team meets with the patients to determine if this is the right course of action. Heart transplant is not an easy solution to heart problems. There are years of anti-rejection medications and tests that follow, but it does offer a tremendous opportunity to extend the life of certain qualified patients.
