Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Investigating the mechanisms of various types of cardiovascular disease is essential to the development of new treatments that save lives. Cardiovascular Research at the Medical College of Georgia is focused on achieving a greater understanding of normal structure and function as well as the development of disease processes. Labs are currently studying the progression of thrombosis, the function of the cardiomyocyte, cardiovascular health in children, as well as many other important studies.
Historically there has been a disconnect between the research that goes on in a lab and the care that is offered to the patient in the clinics. As our research moves forward we are increasingly looking for ways to translate research discoveries into treatment options. The partnership between the Medical College of Georgia and MCG Health Systems enables clinicians to be involved in both research and patient care. Medical students learn about important advances firsthand and are able to connect these with clinical experiences.
