Dean selected for MCG School of Medicine southeast Georgia campus

Dr. Kathryn R. Martin, administrator of the Chatham County, Ga., Health Department, has been named assistant dean of the Southeast Georgia Clinical Campus of the Medical of Georgia School of Medicine based at Savannah's St. Joseph's/Candler Health System. Dr. Martin, an administrator and educator who has worked at MCG and Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon, joins the faculty July 1.

Board of Regents adopts plan to boost medical school enrollment

ATLANTA – The University System of Georgia Board of Regents approved a resolution today that commits the System to a 60 percent expansion of physician education through the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine. The board’s action follows its earlier acceptance of a report calling for medical education expansion in Georgia.

While most folks are still recovering from holiday visitors, Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine leaders are preparing for some of the most important ones they have had in, well, seven years. “School of Medicine accreditation is fundamental to everything else,” Dr. Ruth-Marie Fincher, vice dean for academic affairs of the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine, matter-of-factly. “You may like the process or not but it’s essential to do it, it’s essential to do it well, it’s essential to do it honestly.”

Like the Santa Ana winds, cultural norms are shifting in academic medicine as the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine steers toward its 180th year, said the school’s dean. The old culture emphasized one: THE independent investigator, THE clinical rainmaker, the one-to-one physician-patient relationship, Dr. D. MCG School of Medicine class size to expand to 200 in 2009

The Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine will increase its class size by 5 percent to 200 freshmen for fall 2009, Dean D. Douglas Miller said Thursday. “We want to continue to move forward with quality expansion of our medical school to help meet the health care needs of our state,” says Dr. Miller. “Our applicant pool is strong and we can easily accept 10 more qualified students for 2009 after making appropriate accommodations for increased space, teachers and patients.”

Plans include expanding MCG’s School of Medicine to include a campus in Athens enrolling 40 freshmen by fall semester 2009, says Dr. D. Douglas Miller, medical school dean.
