Course Description

Tansen Hospital and Community Health Program

The United Mission to Nepal started medical work in Tansen in 1954. Since then, the hospital has grown from a small clinic to the present 129 bed size. It serves the population of a wide part of west-central Nepal. The hospital has a very busy out-patient clinic where up to 450 patients are seen daily. The inpatient beds are divided between the medical, surgical, maternity, pediatric, and physiotherapy facilities. The medical staff usually numbers between 12-15 doctors and they come from many countries including Nepal. The hospital is situated on a hillside about 20 minute walk from the main town at an elevation of about 4500 ft with a commanding view of the valley below and the Western Himalayan range beyond.

Student’s work

There will be little formal teaching, but plenty of practical experience and opportunities for a small research project. This should primarily be a learning experience, exposing the student to the very different world of medical care in a developing country, but opportunity will also be given to the student to make a contribution to the medical work. The scope of work is extremely broad.

Language

Most of the senior Nepali staff speak reasonable English, and all clinical notes and records are in English. Previous medical students have not found their lack of Nepali a great problem. Some basic language training is available in Tansen.

Food and Accommodation

Medical students must pay for own expenses. Meals and accommodations are usually arranged by the guest house.

Climate

Highest temperatures are in May to July: about 90 F at mid-day. Coldest temperatures are in December and January, when it may be about 40F in the early morning. Most of the year, it is dry, except during monsoon, July-September, when it rains most days.
