Cellular Biology and Anatomy

The
Department of Cellular Biology and Anatomy is a basic science department
at the Medical College of Georgia. The Medical College of Georgia has
outstanding core facilities and resources available to all researchers.
The researchers in CB&A maximize these resources in advancing a variety
of scientific fields including neuroscience, development, and cell
death. Students and Post-doctoral fellows have an opportunity to use
state-of-the-art methodologies in answering some of the most critical
biological problems facing society. Members of the Department
participate in anatomy, cell biology, histology and neuroscience/neuroanatomy
courses for medical, allied health, dentistry and nursing undergraduate
and graduate students. Training is also available for graduate students
who are interested in acquiring teaching skills in the traditional
anatomic sciences. The department has an active research program contributing new knowledge in several areas of cellular and structural biology. Faculty members pursue research programs within the Department and contribute in areas including development, cancer, vision, neuroscience, cell growth and wound healing. CB&A hosts a seminar series featuring guest scientists from around the country as well as our own faculty. Several laboratories coordinate field-specific journal clubs. Members of the department provide service nationally and internationally as officers of academic societies, as scientific reviewers for the National Institutes of Health and other funding organizations, and as editors or reviewers for scientific journals in a broad range of scientific fields. Our CB&A department’s graduate program provides a training environment in which original biomedical research of the highest quality is promoted preparing trainees for careers in the biomedical sciences (research, teaching, and clinical in an academic or business environment). Students in the departmental Ph.D. program select from a variety of research training opportunities ranging from studies at the molecular level and extending to whole organisms. The department has an active anatomical donation program, which is an important part of the training of new physicians, dentists and medical professionals. This program provides hands-on training of the examination, dissection and study of the human anatomy. Our anatomical donation program is staffed by professionally licensed and caring personnel and provides instruction to students in the schools of Medicine, Allied Health, Dentistry and Nursing, the residency programs and also continuing education seminars and symposiums. The CB&A department supports the Electron Microscopy Core Laboratory, which provides investigators with service, consultation, access to instrumentation, and training in the use of the Transmission and Scanning Electron Microscopes. Trained personnel will prepare specimens and assist in analyses of samples. The core is available to assist all MCG investigators and off-campus investigators. Our goal is to provide quality work in a reasonable time frame at an affordable cost.
