School of Dentistry Goals

The School of Dentistry strives to be a significant participant in addressing the Board of Regents and the Medical College of Georgia institutional goals by providing for the oral health care needs of the citizens.  In order to effectively participate as a school of dentistry, in the Medical College Health Science University and of the University System of Georgia goals have been developed for each level.  These goals represent the commitment of the School of Dentistry to our students and to the citizens of the state of Georgia. 

School of Dentistry Goals Coordinated with the Board of Regents Goal

The University System of Georgia and the School of Dentistry will ensure access to academic excellence and educational opportunities for all Georgians by:

  1. Developing graduates who are intellectually and ethically informed individuals with defined skills and knowledge, capable of leadership, creative endeavors, and contributing citizenship in an ever-increasing interconnected world;
  2. Expanding participation by increasing access while maintaining quality, enhancing diversity, focusing on the needs of nontraditional students, increasing distance education opportunities, advancing public library usage, and marketing the advantages of a postsecondary/dental education to all Georgians;
  3. Improving continuously the quality and quantity of scholastic achievement and research output through its development of research activities, curricula, patient care, and service;
  4. Increasing academic productivity through improved recruitment, increased retention, improved on-time graduation, augmented continuing education opportunities, and current technology;
  5. Emphasizing the recruitment, hiring, development and retention of the best possible faculty, staff, and administration;
  6. Accelerating economic development by providing, when feasible, needed graduates, appropriate academic programs, and expanding marketing of the School and its capabilities as an economic asset of the state;
  7. Seeking the most efficient, effective and technologically sound business and service best practices and regularly comparing ourselves to national peers;
  8. Providing and maintaining superior facilities, funded by innovative mechanisms which increase the speed with which they are usable;
  9. Making the transition to the School of Dentistry educational opportunities seamless with four year colleges for dental students and with other dental schools for Advanced Dental Education Programs;
  10. Increasing, diversifying, and strategically allocating funding;
  11. Maximizing cooperation and maintaining strong relationships within the Medical College of Georgia and with other state agencies, boards, organized dentistry and official state organizations.

School of Dentistry Goals Coordinated with MCG Institutional Goals

  1. Improve Institutional Communications by proactively and positively positioning the School of Dentistry in the eyes of both internal and external constituency
  2. Create a diverse School of Dentistry community that is (more) reflective of the population we serve
  3. Continuously enhance the quality of faculty and staff by enhancing the employment environment thereby increasing the productivity and retention of School of Dentistry faculty and staff.  Also, increase recruitment of clinical investigators and eminent scholars to strengthen the mission and enhance the reputation of the School of Dentistry
  4. Enhance the educational environment and continuously update educational programs (curriculum)
  5. Enhance the research enterprise and productivity of the School of Dentistry 
  6. Improve the access to dental services for Georgia citizens. 

A. School of Dentistry Pre-doctoral Educational Goal

To prepare graduates who possess the knowledge, skills and values to begin the practice of general dentistry.  In addition MCG will prepare proficient dental specialists and provide lifelong learning opportunities for the profession in response to the oral health needs of the people of Georgia

Objectives

  1. To educate and graduate competent general dentists.
  2. To have a 14% increase in total enrollment over the next seven years between 2002 and 2007 with entering credentials at or above the national average.
  3. To rank in the top quintile (11 schools) every year in the five-year rolling average of African American graduates.
  4. To rank in the top quintile (11 schools) every year in the five-year rolling average of African Americans enrolled.
  5. To retain and graduate at least 90% of enrolled students.
  6. To have 80-85% of graduates practice in Georgia and to monitor the practice locations of all graduates.
  7. To have at least 95% of students pass the National Dental Board Examinations, Part I and Part II the first time they are taken, with class performance that places MCG in the 4th quintile or higher among the dental schools in the USA for each year and each class.
  8. To have 99% of students pass the National Dental Board Examinations Part I and Part II by the third time it is taken.
  9. To have all graduates who take the Southern Regional Testing Agency Examination eligible to be licensed to practice within one year of graduation.
  10. To annually survey each class of senior students and faculty and to survey the alumni at one and five years post graduation concerning their satisfaction with the predoctoral program.
  11. To educate and certify proficient endodontists, general practice residents, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, orthodontists, pediatric dentists, periodontists, and prosthodontists.
  12. To annually offer a wide variety of continuing education courses for the profession.

B. School of Dentistry Pre-doctoral Patient Care Goal

To provide a high-quality, state-of-the-art dental health care system, which includes oral health promotion and oral disease prevention, and to encourage innovations in response to changing demographics and oral health needs of the people of Georgia.

Objectives

  1. To provide sufficient patients to meet the needs of the educational program.
  2. To achieve a patient satisfaction rate of 90%.
  3. To provide a variety of patient experiences and clinic sites.
  4. To provide oral health promotion for the people of Georgia.
  5. To increase clinic revenues and collection effectiveness by 4% over a five-year period without regard to fee and class-size increases.

C. School of Dentistry Pre-doctoral Research Goal

To be a center of excellence in research through the generation and application of biomedical knowledge and technology to oral heath disease and to play a role in the transfer of technology to the dental care delivery system.

Objectives

  1. To actively seek and secure sponsored funding for research as measured by:
  • improving our NIH national funding rank by two places over a five-year period;
  • increasing our total funding by 10% over a five-year period;
  • increasing our grant submissions by 15% over a five-year period;
  1. To increase the publication of research results and scholarly activity by 5% over a five-year period.
  2. Over a five-year period, to increase the number of students:
  • Participating in Student Research Day
  • Presenting at national research meetings
  • Research publications
  • Entering graduate programs or residencies

D. Alumni Relations and Fundraising Goal

To establish a strong working relationship with the alumni over the next five years

Objective

To increase alumni contributions by 25 percent per year for the next five years and engage their support in changing legislation governing licensure and oral health policy

  • MCG Alumni Association membership
  • MCG Foundation and Scholarship contributions
  • Georgia State Legislative action

E.  Oral Health Education and Community Outreach Goals

To increase the awareness of the citizens of Georgia regarding the importance of oral health to total health

Objective

To provide oral health education at all levels of society, including legislators, community leaders and the public, and to increase dental services to the underserved populations in the state of Georgia

  • Children’s Dental Health Month participation
  • ADA “Give Kids a Smile” program participation
  • Document responding to MCG Presidential Task Force
  • Extramural clinic sites
  • Warrenton rotation
  • Richmond County Health Department elective
  • Dental School Clinic
