2005-2006 Periodontics Department
Goals & Outcome Indicators
I. Educational Goals: To provide outstanding educational
programs in Periodontics to prepare dental professionals at the pre-doctoral
and postdoctoral levels and to offer lifelong learning opportunities for
members of the profession.
Educational Outcomes:
Pre-doctoral Program: Of the clinical and didactic courses
offered by the Department of Periodontics, there were no student failures
for academic year 2004-2005. However, multiple Incomplete (I) grades were
awarded for the clinical courses PER 5901, PER 5902, PER 5903, and PER
5904. These incompletes were primarily due to missing competency grades.
This trend has continued for academic year 2005-2006 due in part to our
preparations for the Senior Comprehensive Care Clinic which required junior
students to complete some clinical competencies earlier than previously
required. On the 2005 SRTA examination, there were no (0) periodontics
failures from 46 MCG graduates taking the examination. On the 2004 Part II
National Board examination, MCG students’ overall performance ranked 7th in
the nation, while 68.5% (37/54) of the Class of 2005 scored at or above the
national mean, and 31.5% (17/54) scored below the national average on the
Periodontics section. For the 2005 Part II examination, all MCG students
passed the examination, but further information regarding student
performance has not been provided.
Post-doctoral Program: Two students completed the Advanced
Education Program in Periodontics in 2005. Dr. Cortney Davis took a
professional association in Athens, GA. Dr. Heather Watkins enrolled in the
Ph.D. in Oral Biology program in the fall and will be part time faculty in
the Department of Periodontics. Both of these students successfully
completed a research project culminating in a Master of Science Degree in
Oral Biology. Two MCG residents took the 2005 American Academy of
Periodontology In-Service Examination, one scoring 93% or 30th out of 449
(top 7%) and the other scoring 97% or 11th out of 449 (top 3%). Two
graduates of the program successfully completed the Written Examination of
the ABP in 2004 and one in 2005 to become certified as Board-Eligible, and
four graduates of our program also successfully completed the oral
examination of the board and are now Diplomates of the American Board of
Periodontology. Resident research projects resulted in one research
publication. In addition one of the residents completing the program in
2005, Dr. Cortney Davis, was selected as one of three national finalists for
the Dr. and Mrs. Gerald M. Kramer Scholar Award for Excellence sponsored by
the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation.
II. Research Goals: To conduct research in Periodontics, Oral
Biology and Implantology that generates and applies biomedical knowledge and
technology to oral health and disease and promotes the transfer of
technology to the dental care delivery system.
Research Outcomes:
Faculty and residents in Periodontics
published one paper in a refereed professional journal and 3 scientific
abstracts. Two Periodontics graduate students successfully defended their
thesis for the M.S. in Oral Biology. Senior resident, Dr. Tuan Nguyen,
received Third Place in the 2005 Pennel Research Competition sponsored by
the Southern Academy of Periodontology for his research proposal entitled
“Differential effects of (-) epigallocatechin-3-gallate on normal human
epithelial keratinocytes and oral squamous carcinoma cells (OSC-2):
Sequential induction of p57/KIP2 and Caspase-14”. The department has one
NIH-funded research project in which the principal investigator is a
periodontics faculty (A Khocht), and two research contracts funded by
private industry (P Hanes) were completed early in the year. Periodontics
faculty have submitted a total of three grant applications and one research
contract this year, two grant applications to NIDCR and one to the
Osseointegration Foundation and one research contract to Novalar.

Syndrome Patients” ($511,571)
Funded Research Contracts:
