Night Float
"How I survived Night Float"
- Good sleep during day time (forward your pager to 1-2423)
- Reach MCG, VA 5 minutes earlier.
- Bring some food from home (No food at VA and Resident Lounge at MCG stinks, food is not the best but not bad either)
- Scrubs are the way to go.
- Maintain your sleep cycle over weekend (very hard thing to do)
- Your clinic will be on Friday AM.
MCG
- Go to Computer/media room – Chief’s office @ 7:00. Other interns will check out pts to you.
- After you arrive at MCG, if your pager doesn’t go off in 10-15 min, make sure it is working.
- You have right to receive good check out. (Check out sheet must contain, Team name, intern name, pt. full name, location, primary diagnosis, Significant History, Medications and what to expect during night time.) Don’t accept verbal check out.
- Organize your check out (staple all blue, red… check out sheets, color code them)
- Check your MCG e-mail. Sometimes it is the only way you get important updates.
- You can call nursing stations from your cell phone. 706-721-NURSING STATION #. (Most carriers don’t charge for night time minutes)
- Confirm Pt. name, location and team with nurse before you give any thing to any pt. Document whatever you do on check out sheet & Pt’s chart for important things. All verbal orders need to be signed within 24 hr. Ask favor from your fellow intern to sign your verbal orders for routine meds.
- Get cell number of your resident. Text page is very useful at night for non urgent things.
- On call rooms and lounge are on 9th floor.
VA
- Know where to park.
- Go to Police (room next to main entrance information desk) to get your on call pager and call room keys. Get your badge processed for CCU, MICU, LSU and other restricted access gates.
- Go to the Team who was on call. Gold and Yellow – 4th floor, Blue 6th floor.
- Don’t forget to bring your Access Code on first day. Call 7633 – computer help desk to set up your computer log in (vhaaug LASTNAME first initial). Your CPRS log in and password (ABCD123). Access code was given to us during orientation.
- Learn CPRS – at least ‘Orders’, ‘Notes’ tab. Call 7633 for any problem
- Be ready to run Code 99.
- Morning report with Matt in 4D @ 7:30.
