Inpatient Teams' Structure

Inpatient Wards

Currently there are 3 inpatient wards services at both the VA and MCG. The general medicine teams are composed of 1 Resident and 2 Interns. The Subspecialty teams at MCG (Nephrology and Heme/Onc) are composed of 1 Fellow and 2 Interns.

The general medicine teams operate on a q3 call schedule with an incorporated Night Float system. When a team is on long call, they will admit patients from 7am-7pm Sunday-Thursday, and 7am-7am Friday and Saturday. Sunday - Thursday, the Night Float Resident will have admitting responsibilities from 7pm-7am. At MCG there is also a Utility Float Resident who admits for and assists with the Unit Service (MICU/CCU) that has an intern on call, as well as assists with Medicine admissions if the need arises. Typically teams stay overnight 2-3 nights/month.

The subspecialty services (Nephrology and Heme/Onc) do not take overnight call.

**********New for 2009-2010**********

Due to the increased number of Medicine admissions at MCG, a 4th Medicine team will be created. The Night Float system will continue, allowing each General Medicine Team have around 2 overnight calls/month, and a short/long call system will be utilized. This will guarantee 2 Golden weekends of NO CALL and also decrease the total number of on call days

University Hospital, a large private hospital next to MCG, will also begin accepting residents and medical students beginning in 2009. A General Medicine Team will be created, giving our residents the opportunity to experience Inpatient Internal Medicine in the private setting here in Augusta.

MICU/CCU

MCG-At MCG each Critical Care service has 1 Fellow, 2 Residents, and 2 Interns. Call is q4 and alternates Residents/Interns. If a Resident is on call for the MICU, then an Intern is on call for the CCU and vice versa. Whenever an Intern is on call, the Utility Float Resident is in-house to cover that service as well.

VA-At the VA, the MICU team consists of 1 Fellow, 1 Resident, and 1 Intern, and the Cardiology team consists of 1 Fellow and 2 Interns. Call is also q4 divided equally amongst the residents. If an Intern is on call, the General Medicine Resident or Night Float Resident who is on call, will also cover both services.
