Program Tracts

A. Categorical: We offer three tracks to categorical medicine residents. This provides residents the opportunity to pursue their personal academic goals while satisfying the requirements of the American Board of Internal Medicine.

1. Sub-specialty Track
The subspecialty track allows participation in desired subspecialty inpatient, outpatient, and consultative experiences in the first two (2) years of residency to prepare for application to competitive fellowship programs such as cardiology, gastroenterology, nephrology, pulmonary/critical care, infectious diseases, hematology/oncology, rheumatology, endocrinology, and allergy-immunology. Residents will initiate and participate in subspecialty related scholastic and research activities as well as attend a specified group of elective rotations.

2. Hospitalist Track
The hospitalist track allows enhanced participation in inpatient care on general medicine. This is coupled with training in managed care administration, quality improvement, hospital epidemiology, drug utilization review, medical error prevention, and medical outcomes research.

3. General Medicine Track
The general medicine track prepares residents for a career as a general internist working primarily in an outpatient primary care or multi-specialty setting. Residents receive special training in practice organization, communication skills and small group leadership.

B. Research/Internal Medicine--5 Year Combined Track
The physician research track is designed for candidates primarily interested in pursuing a career in research. It is an integrated program that combines training in research with training in clinical internal medicine. It is a 5 year tract, where first 2 – 3 years are dedicated to research work, followed by 2 years of residency training. Throughout the research block, 10% of time is dedicated to outpatient ambulatory clinic. The Diabetes and Obesity Discovery Institute at the Medical College of Georgia will pair you with a research mentor, and your work and progress will be reviewed regularly. Mentors are selected based on your pre-identified research interests. Each mentor will provide access to research equipment and resources, professional development in the form of seminars and scientific presentation and will help develop your skills in competing for extramural research dollars. The coursework will lead to a Master’s Degree in Biomedical Science, and will focus on clinical and genetic epidemiology, pharmacology and medical outcomes, among others.

C. Preliminary Medicine Internship
This track is for medical graduates desiring strong internal medicine training prior to assuming a residency in specialties such as neurology, dermatology, radiology, emergency medicine, psychiatry, otolaryngology, and others. The one year internship is rich in inpatient general medicine, cardiology, nephrology, hematology/oncology and critical care, and establishes key competencies in care of very ill patients that will be of great value during a future career in a variety of specialties.
