Plastic Surgery Residency Program

Welcome!  The Medical College of Georgia's Section of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery offers a fully accredited two year independent plastic surgery residency leading to board eligibility in plastic surgery.  The program began in 1978 under the leadership of Dr. Kenna S. Given, who remained as the chief of the program until 2001.  Dr. Jack Yu is the chief and will continue with the goal of building this residency program.  Dr. Given is past Chairman of the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Past President of the PSEF (Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation) and former member of the RRC (Residency Review Committee) and has assured that the resident's operative experience satisfies all RRC requirements.  In June 1996, the program was recommended for the maximum five year full accreditation by the RRC.

Rotation Schedule:
Each resident repeats the following rotation schedule in each year with graded responsibility with progression through the program.  Second year residents are considered chief residents.

MCG Service:
One chief resident and one junior resident spend a total of six months each year on the MCG Plastic Surgery service working with all four full time attendings.  This service exposes the resident to the full spectrum of plastic surgery including cosmetic surgery, craniofacial and cleft lip/palate surgery, breast reduction and reconstruction, reconstructive surgery of the lower extremity, trunk, head and neck, and microsurgery.

Hand Service:
Each resident spends three consecutive months each year on the combined Orthopedic/Plastic Surgery Hand Service working with two Orthopedic residents, one Orthopedic attending, Dr. Marcus Fulcher, and one Plastic Surgery attending, Dr. R. Christie Wray.  The Hand Service treats the full spectrum of hand pathology including: traumatic bony and soft tissue injuries, tendon transfers, congenital deformities, infectious problems, arthritic conditions, neoplasms, nerve compressions and reconstructions, and microsurgical reconstructions.  Three days of the week (one for outpatient and two for inpatient/am admit procedures) are devoted to operative procedures.  Clinic is a full day with an average of sixty to seventy patients for new, preoperative, and post-operative evaluations.

Veterans Administration Medical Center Service (VA Service):
Each resident spends three consecutive months each year as "chief resident" of the VA Service.  The resident is assigned a General Surgery intern to assist with the running of this service.  This resident is afforded a significant degree of responsibility on this service with attendings providing supervision.  The majority of the operative problems involve hand cases, pressure sores, and benign and malignant skin lesions.  The VA resident also spends each Tuesday at Fort Gordon (Dwight D. Eisenhower Medical Center) under the supervision of Dr. Cornelius James.  An excellent hands-on experience is gained during this time in cosmetic, reconstructive and laser procedures.
