A New Approach to Analyzing
Self-Monitored Blood Glucose Measurements

Abstract:  In this presentation, we discuss a new approach to analyzing self-monitored blood glucose measurements (SMBG) taken over an extended period of time, using Bayesian statistical methods. The proposed method properly accommodates outliers to provide a meaningful average SMBG value. We also discuss the relationship between average SMBG and hemoglobin A1C, and we show how we can express uncertainty about hemoglobin A1C using only the SMBG measurements. Our proposed method is applied to real data collected over three months using OneTouch Ultra2 meter, on diabetic patients who have been stabilized by good diet, medication and exercise.
