Office of Primary Responsibility: Campus Safety Committee
No. 3.0.10

Building Corridors

1.0 Purpose
To define and establish procedures to operate and maintain all corridors and exits in all Medical College of Georgia buildings.

2.0 Policy
The Medical College of Georgia will comply with the standards of the National Fire Protection Association, as adopted and amended by the State of Georgia, that state, "A means of egress is a continuous and unobstructed way of exit travel from any point in a building or structure to a public way. Every required exit, exit access, or exit discharge shall be continuously maintained free of all obstructions or impediments to full instant use in the case of fire or other emergency."

3.0 Procedure
The Environmental Health and Safety Division's Fire Safety Office is responsible for hazard surveys of MCG buildings and its properties. The Fire Safety Office is responsible for maintaining and reporting deficiencies to the persons responsible for correction and, when applicable, the MCG Campus Safety Committee. Corridor requirements are as follows:

3.1 All corridors are to be kept clear and unobstructed.

3.2  Non-combustible equipment (wheelchairs, scales) may be maintained in corridor alcoves, providing the equipment does not extend into the established corridor width.

3.3 Wheeled carts (maintenance, delivery, environmental services) may be maintained in the corridor only while in use. In the event of a Code 17 they must be removed from the corridor immediately.

3.4 No equipment, wheeled or otherwise, may be stored while in use or left unattended to recharge in a corridor.

3.5 When furnishings are permitted to be in a corridor, all items must be kept on one side of the corridor to maintain the proper clear width.
