E. Kountakis, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Stil Kountakis joined the faculty at MCG effective
July 1, 2003 as Professor and Vice-chair of the Department of Otolaryngology
and as the Director of Rhinology/ Sinus Surgery. Dr. Kountakis received his
medical degree from the University of Texas-Houston Medical School and
served his residencies in general surgery and in otolaryngology-head and
neck surgery at University of Texas affiliated hospitals. He subsequently
received his PhD in medicine from the University of Crete Medical School in
Heraklion, Crete, Greece. Dr. Kountakis has served on the faculty at the
University of Texas-Houston Medical School and the University of Virginia in
Charlottesville where he was the Director of Rhinology-Sinus Surgery.
Dr. Kountakis’s research interests include clinical,
physiological, genetic and immune-basic science parameters of chronic
rhinosinusitis and medical-surgical outcomes. His research interests also
include determining the presence of cysteinyl leukotrienes in chronic
hyperplastic sinusitis, establishing the microbiology of chronic sinusitis,
and comparing the efficacy of antimicrobial agents in the treatment of acute
bacterial sinusitis.
Dr. Kountakis has published extensively in sinusitis and
serves on the editorial board or is a reviewer of 4 major journals in the
field of Otolaryngology. Dr. Kountakis serves on many committees of the
American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and is a recipient
of the Academy’s 2002 Service Honor Award. He was selected as a Daiichi
Scholar of the Academy, which is a Clinical Scholars Program in
Evidence-Based Medical Research. Dr. Kountakis also serves on the Board of
Directors of the American Rhinologic Society. Among his many other
professional activities, Dr. Kountakis is a Fellow of the American Academy
of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, the American College of Surgeons,
and the American Rhinologic Society. He also has served as Guest Examiner
for the oral examination of the American Board of Otolaryngology.
