and Swallowing Disorders
Dr. Lori M. Burkhead joined the faculty at MCG effective December 2005 as Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology and Clinical Research Scientist in the Center for Voice and Swallowing Disorders. Dr. Burkhead earned a Bachelor’s Degree of Speech and Hearing Sciences from the University of South Alabama in 1992. In 1994 she earned a Master’s Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the MGH Institute in Boston; a program with clinical and academic affiliations with both Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She enjoyed a successful clinical career as a speech-language pathologist in acute care, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation settings before returning to academia to obtain a PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences from the University of Florida in 2005.
Dr. Burkhead’s clinical interests include rehabilitation of voice and swallowing in critically ill patients with special emphasis in issues unique to tracheostomy and ventilator dependency, voice restoration and dysphagia rehabilitation in head and neck cancer, and dysphagia rehabilitation due to a variety of neurologic etiologies including progressive disease processes, stroke, brain injury, brain tumor and other traumatic injuries.
Dr. Burkhead’s research interests include the application of exercise science principles to neuromuscular rehabilitation of voice and swallowing. Her current research is concerned with the development of more effective treatments for dysphagia rehabilitation in head and neck cancer.
