Inserting an image into an Endnote 7.0 reference

A graphic or object may be inserted into the Image field of an EndNote 7.0 reference; Image and Caption fields are included in all EndNote reference types. As a searchable field, the Caption field (References > Search References) can aid in locating an image stored in an EndNote reference. An image in a EndNote Library, which may be a figure or table, may also be inserted into documents using the Cite While You Write TM feature.

The Image field may be displayed in the EndNote Library Window (a maximum of five fields can be displayed: Edit > Preferences > Display Fields): a paper clip icon in the Image field indicates Image field content.

An EndNote reference may contain a single image or object. To insert an image into an EndNote reference:

  1. Open an EndNote Library.
  2. Open the EndNote reference (References > Edit References) and highlight the Image field to receive the image or object.
  3. References > Insert Image [or Insert Object].
  4. Insert picture box opens > retrieve Image file and place in File name field.
  5. Click Open; image or object will appear as a thumbnail in Image field. (Fig. 23)
  6. Tab to or highlight the Caption field and label image. (Fig. 23)
  7. Close EndNote reference to save work.

To delete an image from an EndNote reference, highlight the Image field and press Delete on the keyboard.

Limitations

  • only one image in a reference; if a second image is added to a reference, the first image is deleted.
  • do not "copy and paste" an image into a reference; always employ the Insert Picture or Insert Object commands.
  • EndNote may not recognize all file formats, but does recognize:
    *.bmp
    *.gif
    *.jpg
    *.tif
    *.png
    Bitmap
    Graphics Interchange Format
    JPEG File Interchange Format
    Tag Image File Format
    Portable Network Graphics

DATA folders
EndNote creates a .DATA folder to hold images in the same folder that holds the EndNote library. This means inserting an image into an EndNote reference in the EndNote Library "handwashing" will create a "handwashing.Data" folder. (Fig. 25) DATA folders should be backed up when the corresponding EndNote Library is also backed up.

An image without a caption was found in this article:
Turner T. Dishing the dirt in the office. Nurs Stand 2002;17(10):24.

Fig. 29 - thumbnail picture in Image field of EndNote reference has caption being added.

As shown in fig. 29, a descriptive caption may be added to the Image.

To insert an Image (or any object, table, or figure in the Image field) into a MS Word document:

  1. Open the EndNote Library (*.enl) holding the images.
  2. Open the MS Word document and place cursor at insertion point for the image.
  3. Tools > EndNote 7 > Find Figure(s)...
  4. In the EndNote Find Figures(s)... box, enter a search term in the Find box; click Search.
  5. Highlight the reference in the EndNote Library;click Insert.

The Image, Object, Table, or Chart is labeled and numbered in the text of the document as a "Figure"; the Image, Object, Table, or Chart is displayed in the document with a "Figure" heading. Open the EndNote Style Manager to customize the labeling and formatting of inserted items in a document.
