The Medical College of Georgia, chartered in 1828 as a single academy to provide
instruction in "several branches of the healing art," is a major academic health
center and a health sciences research university. The institution, consisting of the
schools of Allied Health Sciences, Dentistry, Graduate Studies, Medicine, and Nursing and
the Hospital and Clinics, serves a highly focused and specialized student body. As an
academic health center and research university, the Medical College of Georgia is
committed to:

In view of these commitments, the Medical College of Georgia affirms the
following major purposes:
to provide outstanding educational programs for both health
professionals, biomedical scientists and educators at the undergraduate, graduate, and
postgraduate levels and for lifelong learning through excellence in teaching and the total
development of students in response to the health needs of the state of Georgia
to provide a high quality, state-of-the art health care system, which
includes health promotion and disease prevention, and to encourage, test and improve
access through the use of innovations in health care delivery responsive to the changing
demographics and needs of the people of the state and nation
to be a leading center of excellence in research through the generation
and application of biomedical knowledge and technology to human health and disease and to
play an expanding role in the transfer of technology to the health care delivery system
