GIL Express
GIL Express
GIL Express service allows eligible MCG library patrons to
borrow circulating books from over thirty other participating University System
of Georgia (USG) library collections at no charge.
“Walk-Up” GIL Express
A MCG library patron visits a participating USG library and
presents a MCG ID to check-out material they select from the circulating
collection.
“Online” GIL Express
A MCG library patron orders a book remotely through the GIL
Universal Catalog (UC)
https://giluc.usg.edu . The GIL Universal Catalog is the combined online
library catalogs of the University System of Georgia libraries participating in
GIL Express. The MCG patron selects a pick-up library within the GIL Express
system for the book to be delivered.
How will I be notified when an “Online” GIL Express book
arrives?
While the Pick-Up Library will make every attempt to notify
the patron, the patron should check their GIL “My Account” daily. The GIL “My
Account” logon link is found at the GIL@MCG home page
https://gil.mcg.edu (GIL@MCG is the Greenblatt Library’s online catalog).
GIL Express Policies
How long is the loan period?
The initial loan period for a GIL Express book is
twenty-eight days.
How are GIL Express books renewed?
If there are no recalls for the book, and the patron
borrowing account contains no fines, overdues, or recalls, up to two additional
twenty-eight day loan periods can be requested.
- All renewals are requested online, through a patron’s
GIL “My Account.”
- All renewals must be performed before the due date.
- The library that owns a book loaned on GIL Express
may recall the book at any time after the initial loan period, regardless of
due date.
How are GIL Express books returned?
Return books to any
University System of Georgia library participating in GIL Express.
What happens when GIL Express books are overdue?
- All borrowing is blocked until the books are returned.
- All overdue books must be returned and are not eligible
for renewal.
- There is no daily overdue fine at this time.
- failing to return books promptly may result in steep,
non-refundable replacement fees: replacement cost plus $35.00.
- some libraries may apply a $2.50 per day overdue
recall fine rate – that’s when the library that owns a book recalls it
for another patron, and wants the book returned quickly after the initial
loan period.
- check the GIL “My Account” daily to monitor possible
recall notices.
