Mission
The Robert B. Greenblatt, M.D. Library of the Medical College of Georgia is committed
to enabling all members of the Medical College community to take full advantage of its
resources. In an effort to ensure access to library collections and services for students,
faculty, and staff with disabilities, the library has modified existing services and
purchased special equipment. Persons who wish to take advantage of these services may
register at the Library Information Center (LInC- 706-721-3441). Special services in
addition to the ones listed below also may be requested at the LInC. All staff working in
public service areas of the library will be pleased to accommodate any reasonable request
from a disabled user. Do not hesitate to ask for assistance. Contact the Head of
Education and Information Services (706-721-9911) for additional assistance.
Library Access and Assistance
Most Greenblatt Library materials are included in the online catalog on GIL@MCG which can be searched by keyword, author,
title, or subject. GALILEO contains periodical indexes, catalogs of other libraries, and
Internet access. The GIL@MCG and GALILEO terminals are accessible to persons in
wheelchairs. The LInC staff will assist in the retrieval of information from
GIL@MCG or GALILEO. Workstations for those with visual impairments are available in the
Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) lab in Room 148.
Borrowing
Users with disabilities affiliated with the Medical College or the University System of
Georgia may authorize a proxy to check out library material on their behalf.
Education and Information Services
The library provides assistance in locating and using library resources. Mediated
searches are available for a fee. Ready reference services are available by telephone.
Reference questions may be submitted in writing or via electronic mail. You will receive a
reply Monday-Friday within 24 hours. Handouts explaining how to use
GIL@MCG and GALILEO and other resources
are available. Electronic information is accessible through the library homepage.
Retrieval Services
- In-library requests for retrieval - The LInC will accept requests to
have library materials retrieved from the shelf for in-library use or checkout. Staffing
allows, items will be retrieved immediately. Otherwise, an estimated time (generally
within two hours) will be provided.
- Telephone requests for retrieval - Registered disabled users may
request that a specific item be retrieved from the shelves by phoning the
LInC. Generally,
available items will be retrieved within two hours and held for pickup by the user or the
designated proxy. Requestors are advised to call prior to coming to the library in the
event that the item is not available.
Renewal
- Telephone - Registered users may renew material by telephone (721-3441)
unless the items are overdue or are requested by another user.
Photocopy Assistance
Library photocopiers are self-service and use a debit card, copy cards or cash.
Library-assisted photocopy service is offered to accommodate users with disabilities. For
more details, ask for a fact sheet at the LInC. Copies will be made as soon as possible,
depending on staff availability, and generally will require no more than two hours for 20
pages or fewer. While care will be taken to make good copies, the library will not accept
responsibility for any bad copies. The library reserves the right to refuse requests that
would take an unreasonable amount of staff time to accomplish. Copyright guidelines are
followed.
Physical Environment
- Parking - Specially designated parking areas for individuals with
disabilities are available in front of the Greenblatt Library.
- Entrance - The main entrance of the library has automatic doors.
- Elevators - The second floor of the library can be reached by elevator.
- Classrooms / Special Events - When classes or special events are
scheduled, a contact phone number for disability services will be included.
- Design of public areas - All public areas of the library including
reading and study areas, the stacks, reserves, and photocopy have ample clearance. LInC
staff will gladly help retrieve items from the reference, journal, and circulating
collections as outlined under Retrieval Services.
- Restrooms - The restrooms on both floors have been modified for access
by persons with physical disabilities.
- Telephones - Two courtesy phones in the vending area and one at the
LInC are accessible to standing or seated people.
- Water fountains - The water fountains have disposable paper cups to
enhance accessibility.
- Evacuation Procedures - In the event of an emergency, second floor
library users with disabilities should wait in the nearest enclosed fire stairwell for
assistance. Public safety will be clearing the building during an emergency and will be
checking the stairwell entrances. We would encourage disabled patrons who can not use the
stairs in an emergency to avail themselves of retrieval services.
