Faculty Jobs

Congratulations to the faculty members who have been recognized for outstanding research, teaching and service for 2009!

  • Darrell Brann, PhD
Dr. Darrell Brann, Regents Professor of Neurology, chief of developmental neurobiology and associate director of the Institute of Molecular Medicine and Genetics, received the Mahesh Distinguished Research Award for significant sustained contributions to research, sustained external funding support as a NIH principal investigator and outstanding mentoring and leadership qualities.

Dr. Brann studies neuronal cell death and brain cell protection in stroke. His studies of estrogen's role in stroke survival have shown how a protein interacts with estrogen receptors in the brain to enable the hormone to act quickly – as it likely would after a stroke to protect the brain – and more slowly as it does in ovulation. His studies of communication between the ovaries and the brain and back to the ovaries have helped elucidate the causes of age-related infertility. A noted mentor, he advises 24 graduate students, directs the graduate program in neuroscience and co-directs the NIH training grant that supports that graduate program. He has further supported graduate students by endowing a $1,000 scholarship in neuroscience awarded annually to the most outstanding student. (MCG News Release)

  • Robert Yu, PhD
The School of Graduate Studies honored Dr. Robert K. Yu, Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar in Molecular and Cellular Neurobiology. Dr. Yu came to MCG in 2000 after chairing the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at the Medical College of Virginia.

Dr. Yu, a neuroscientist, helped secure a National Institutes of Health training grant to start a graduate program in neuroscience and in 1994, he organized the China-U.S. Biochemistry Admissions Program, or CUSBA, a scientific and educational organization that interviews and recommends Chinese students who are likely to be successful in U.S. graduate schools. Dr. Yu founded the Institute of Neuroscience at MCG and directed the Institute of Molecular Medicine and Genetics from 2000 until early 2009.

His studies of brain development and signal transduction are paving the way for better treatment and potential cures for neurodegenerative diseases.  His work has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health for more than 30 years. He has co-authored three books and has authored or co-authored more 370 research papers. (MCG News Release)
