Research Emphasis:
My laboratory is geared towards advancing cell transplantation therapy for stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, and other neurological disorders. Human-derived stem and progenitor cells that have been genetically engineered using viral vectors are currently being examined using in vivo and cell/tissue culture models of these human disorders. The therapeutic effects of immunosuppressants, neurotrophic factors, free radical scavengers, and cognitive enhancers, as well as "enriched environment" are also being studied to improve transplantation functional outcomes. The goal is to elucidate neuronal mechanisms underlying brain injury/degeneration and, in turn, exploit these neuronal pathways via transplantation therapy to induce protection and/or regeneration in diseased or aging brain.
