MCG Remembers Dr. Ji Cheng
A memorial service for Dr. Ji Cheng, a Ph.D. student in biomedical sciences at the Medical College of Georgia who died March 10, was held Monday, March 24.
The Rev. Jeff Flowers, director of pastoral care for MCG Health presided. Speakers included MCG President Daniel W. Rahn, Graduate Studies Dean Gretchen Caughman and friends of Dr. Cheng.
Dr. Cheng died tragically March 10 after being hit by a bus while walking to her morning class.
She is the beloved wife of Chaohui Wu of China and only daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Shouming Cheng, also of China.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of such a wonderful, sweet person and outstanding student,” said Dr. Gretchen Caughman, graduate school dean.
“Ji was talented, bright and energetic, everything we look for in a student and a future scientist. She had a true love of biomedical research and would have had a terrific career ahead of her. We are proud to have had her as one of our graduate students.”
During her time at MCG, she enriched our lives with friendship and our hearts with joy, added Dr. Patricia Cameron, graduate school associate dean. “She impressed us with her talents and skills as a gifted young scientist. In honoring Ji, we would like to share some quotes from the heartfelt memories that faculty and friends have shared with us, so that all can know the special person we knew.”
...as a special person
-
She was the sweetest person I ever met.
-
Always a beautiful smile on her face.
-
Ji was an adorable, sweet and caring individual who always had a smile on her face.
-
Ji is one of most special persons I have ever known.
-
She was very engaging to speak with, thoughtful of others, and pleasant to be around.
-
I do remember her as shy but so respectful and always with a smile on her face.
- She is always very independent, has her own thoughts and her own dreams. She always tries all she can to chase her dreams.
- She deeply loved life and nature.
- I will remember her character and her smile.
- She is my best friend ever.
- Kitchen was the place we first met and the good Chinese food she made was the reason why we became friends.
- She was a precious friend of mine not just because we had common language (Cantonese), but she was a happy girl all the time, the joy from her could just influence people around her.
…as a scholar and scientist
-
She is smart, knowledgeable, always energetic and ready to learn new things.
-
Always a curious scientist.
-
She told me she loves her new lab and was going to join the lab for her graduate study.
-
She brought Chinese food one day for us in the lab. It shows how fast she became a member of our lab family.
-
In the laboratory, she was like a child in a toy store.
-
Her eager approach to lab work, combined with her talent and intellect, were the reasons she had an exceptionally steep learning curve.
-
… the work she completed during … rotations … already is enough for us to take forward toward publication.
- She is also an outstanding medical student and an excellent medical doctor. Her patients love her and a lot of them became good friends with her.
- Ji was selected into the seven-year MD/MS program which is a program for the elites in 1996 in Sun Yat-Sen University of Medical Sciences.
…as a loving spouse, daughter and friend
- She went to Tibet, China in 2001 where she met her husband.
- She told me she bought a car and was waiting for her beloved husband to come over for reunion. This is her dream for a long time.
- Ji, thank you for your care and delicious dishes, even though we just appeared in each other’s life for a very short period of time, it was a piece of precious memory of mine.
- The tragedy broke all her friends' hearts--in China and in the U.S., or anywhere else in the world.
- She will be in my heart forever.
- I hope her soul rests in peace and God will help her family to be strong at this devastating moment.
