Funding the John F. Beard Award

 

 

The Beard Award Criteria

Eligibility - graduating seniors from: 

School of Allied Health Sciences
School of Medicine
School of Nursing
School of Graduate Studies and post-baccalaureate students from Allied Health Sciences, Medicine and Nursing.

Criteria for Nomination - A graduating student who is considered to have performed significant, meritorious, compassionate service to MCG patients, the patient's family or the Medical College community without expectation of recognition or reward.  The academic record of the nominees will not be considered.

An Institutional Selection Committee will be appointed by the Academic Council using the following criteria:

  1. Two members of the Academic Council who are elected by the faculty:  Vice Chair-Elect and Past Vice Chair, who will serve as chair.

  2. One member each, representing the Schools of Allied Health Sciences, Medicine and Nursing.  These members should be from faculty with clinical experience and who are involved with juniors and seniors.

Duties of the Institutional Selection Committee:

  1. Insure nominating agencies/individuals are reminded of deadlines and policies.

  2. Work with the Allied Health Sciences, Medicine and Nursing school award committees.

  3. Nominees submitted each year will be distributed to these committees for semifinal selection.

  4. Select the winning semifinalists.

Individual School Awards Committees, within the Schools of Allied Health Sciences, Medicine and Nursing will select semifinalists and pass their names and files to the Institutional Selection Committee.

Duties of the School Awards Committee:

  1. Receive nominations.

Nominations will be solicited from the respective senior classes (AHS, SOM, SON). 
Senior students will be asked to list their three most compassionate classmates.
The top 2 nominees will be considered for selection as semifinalists.

Who else can nominate?
Hospital departments - floor nurses, staff or family members may initiate action through these departments.
Individual school departments.
Any faculty member.

  1. Solicit supplemental information from hospital staff, family members, etc.

  2. Insure the semifinalists' recommendation packages for students are in order.
