Histopathology Core Laboratory

The goal of the Histopathology Core Laboratory is to provide quality histology service that will meet each investigators needs. There are two components to this core, the service laboratory and users laboratory. The core service laboratory is staffed with a full time registered histology technician and is approved for both human and animal tissue samples. This component serves both on-campus and off-campus investigators.
The users laboratory is equipped with specialized instruments for histology and is approved only for animal tissue. It serves only those affiliated with the MCG. 

LOCATION

The Service Lab is located in CB 1113 on the first floor of the Carl Sanders Research and Education Building. The Users Lab is located in CL 3170 on the third floor of the Hamilton Wing.

HOURS OF OPERATION

Monday through Friday
8:00 am. – 4:30 pm.


The core will follow the Medical College of Georgia calendar for holidays.  

 

Services:

  • Preparing protocols to fit the investigator’s needs

  • Processing tissue (human and animal)

  • Processing tissue for RNA/DNA paraffin in-situ staining 

  • Paraffin embedding

  • Vibratome sections

  • Cutting of paraffin blocks

  • Cutting of OCT frozen blocks by mounting or floating

  • Unstained sections or routine Hematoxylin and Eosin staining

  • Special stains (AFB, Alcian blue, Amyloid cresyl violet, Gram, GMS, Iron, Masson trichrome, MGP, Mucicarmine, PAS, Safranin O and VVG)

  • Decalcify bone/tissue

  • Providing technical assistance

  • Providing technical assistance and hands on training for the Core Users Lab

  • Maintaining equipment in the User Lab

The Core is always willing to expand its services to meet your histology needs. From necropsy to special stains to study work-ups. If the core does not currently offer a service that you need, please call.
